New Hope Valley

The New Hope Valley is located in the heart of The Triangle (North Carolina). The valley has been the site of a broad range of cultures for more than 10,000 years. Archaeologists have explored the remains of 450 prehistoric and historic sites in the area and have uncovered many Native American artifacts.

The area was first explored in 1701, and by 1810 a network of farms dotted the valley linked to Pittsboro, North Carolina, the county seat. The land was settled by Scottish Highlanders in the 1740s, and it saw action in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. It became a logging center in the early 1900s as railroads such as the New Hope Valley Railway pushed through the area.

Following a disastrous hurricane which struck the Cape Fear River Basin in 1945, Congress directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to undertake a comprehensive study of water resource needs in the area. The project, then known as New Hope Lake, was authorized in 1963, and construction began in 1967. In 1973, the name of the project was changed to B. Everett Jordan Lake in honor of the former senator from North Carolina.

New Hope, Pennsylvania

New Hope is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. The population was 2,528 at the 2010 census. The borough lies on the west bank of the Delaware River at its confluence with Auqetong Creek. The two-lane New Hope – Lambertville Bridge carries automobile and foot traffic across the Delaware to Lambertville, New Jersey on the east bank. New Hope's primary industry is tourism.

In 2015, Coldwell Banker reported that New Hope has the most expensive real estate market in Pennsylvania and the 86th most expensive real estate market in the United States.

History

New Hope is located along the route of the Old York Road, the former main highway between Philadelphia and New York City. It was generally regarded as the halfway point, where travelers would stay overnight and be ferried across the river the next morning. Though this route is largely obsolete, the section of U.S. Route 202 that passes just north of town still bears the name York Road. The original route is now known as Bridge St. (PA 179).

Hope Valley, Rhode Island

Hope Valley is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Hopkinton in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,649 at the 2000 census. Hope Valley is the largest village in Hopkinton and the town's principal commercial center. While the village of Hope Valley is located in Hopkinton, its zip code, 02832, extends into the neighboring town of Richmond.

The central portion of the village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 as the Hope Valley Historic District. The 183-acre (74 ha) historic district includes 134 contributing buildings and three other contributing structures.

History

The earliest European-American settlement of the village site was by Hezekiah Carpenter, who arrived in 1770 and dammed the Wood River and built several small water-powered mills. His settlement was called Carpenter's Mills. Around 1818 a tannery was built at the site. The textile industry arrived in 1824, when Gardner Nichols and Russell Thayer bought the existing mills and began to operate them for carding of wool; fulling, coloring and finishing of cloth; and manufacture of textile machinery.
