New City, New York

New City is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Clarkstown, Rockland County, New York, United States, part of the New York Metropolitan Area. An affluent suburb of New York City, the hamlet is located 18 miles (29 km) north of the city at its closest point, Riverdale, Bronx. Within Rockland County, New City is located north of Bardonia, northeast of Nanuet, east of New Square and New Hempstead, south of Garnerville and Haverstraw village, and west, straight across Lake Deforest, of Congers. New City's population was 33,559 at the 2010 census, making it the 14th most populous CDP/hamlet in the state of New York.

New City is the county seat, and most populous community of Rockland County and the location of the Clarkstown Police Department, Sheriff's office and corrections facility. The downtown area is one of the main business districts in the county. The ZIP code of New City is 10956.

New City is one of Chicago's 77 official community areas, located on the southwest side of the city in the South Side district. It contains the neighborhoods of Canaryville and Back of the Yards.

The area was home to the famous Union Stock Yards that were on Chicago's south side until closed in 1971.

Neighborhoods

Back of the Yards

Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential neighborhood so named because it was near the former Union Stock Yards, which employed thousands of European immigrants in the early 20th century. Life in this neighborhood was explored in Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel The Jungle. The area was formerly part of the town of Lake until it was annexed by Chicago in 1889. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was occupied largely by Eastern European immigrants and their descendants, who were predominantly ethnic Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak (from Hungary).

In the 1930s the activist Saul Alinsky did community organizing in this area, as its people suffered during the Great Depression. This work led to his founding the Industrial Areas Foundation in 1940, which trained community organizers.

New City is an album by the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, released in 1975. It peaked at Number 47 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts.

New City marks the return to the line-up of lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas.

Reception

Writing for Allmusic, critic Jason Elias wrote the album "It does sound promising, but, in all honesty, New City's fortunes seemed doomed from the start."
