Fermata

A fermata [ferˈmaːta] (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye or cyclops eye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is a symbol of musical notation indicating that the note should be prolonged beyond its normal duration or note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer.

When a fermata is placed over a bar or double-bar, it is used to indicate the end of a phrase or section of a work. In a concerto, it indicates the point where the soloist is to play a cadenza.

A fermata can occur at the end of a piece (or movement), or it can occur in the middle of a piece, and be followed by either a brief rest or more notes.

Other names for a fermata are corona (Italian), point d'orgue (French), Fermate (German), and calderón (Spanish).

History and use

This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

Pause (musician)

Daniel Zisette Kushnir better known by his stage name Pause is an American musician and rap artist. The multi-instrumentalist producer has risen to prominence in 2013 with placements on the Showtime series Ray Donovan (song: "Shouts Out") and Volition, Inc.'s 2013 release, Saints Row IV (soundtrack) (song: "Caroline").

Origin of Name

The name Pause was originally a nickname given to him by his father—an attempt to teach him to pause before engaging in destructive behaviour.

"Nemesis" is the 72nd episode of Star Trek: Voyager, the fourth episode of the fourth season. In it, Chakotay helps a race of aliens wage a war.

Plot

Chakotay's shuttle has been shot down, leaving him stranded alone on a jungle planet. He is captured by troops of the humanoid Vori species, led by Brone (Michael Mahonen), but they appear to release him when they determine he is not of the "nemesis." Chakotay tries to find his shuttle the next day, and encounters one of these "nemesis" - known as the Kradin, who are fierce and non-human in appearance. Chakotay's shuttle is gone so he returns to the Vori. He bonds with them and immediately understands what they are up against. As he joins the Vori in the struggle against the Kradin, he sees evidence of the evil of the nemesis: they mock the Vori's religious rituals and send a peaceful Vori village to death camps.

Nemesis (1920 film)

Nemesis is a 1920 Italian silent film directed by Carmine Gallone and starring Ida De Bonis, Soava Gallone and Ciro Galvani.
