Navaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. The word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, nava meaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra" (also spelled Dasera). Navaratri is an important major festival and is celebrated all over India and Nepal. Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated twenty days after Dasera. Though there are in total five types of Navaratri that come in a year, Sharad Navaratri is the most popular one. Hence, the term Navaratri is being used for Sharada Navaratri here.
The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are considered to be important junctions of climatic and solar influences. The film is well known for starring Sivaji Ganesan in nine distinct roles: the basic emotions - wonder, fear, compassion, anger, peace, love, courage, repulsion and happiness. It was Sivaji's 100th film he acted. Navarathri traces Nalina's (Savitri) experience of these nine emotions on nine consecutive nights. The record of playing most number of roles in one Tamil film was long held by Sivaji Ganesan until 2008 when it was broken by Kamal Haasan in Dasavathaaram (2008). In 1966, the film was remade in Telugu with the same title and in Hindi as Naya Din Nai Raat (1974)with Sanjeev Kumar.
