National Music Publishers Association

The NMPA has pursued litigation against numerous organizations, including Amway,YouTube, Kazaa, LimeWire, FullScreen and Napster.

History

The NMPA was founded in 1917 as the Music Publishers' Protective Association, seeking to end the practice of publishers having to pay vaudeville theaters for performing their music. The payola was said to have reached $400,000. The MPPA mandate went into effect May 7, 1917. Founding firms included:

In 1927, the NMPA founded the Harry Fox Agency, a mechanical rights collecting society.

In 1966 the name of the Music Publishers' Protective Association was changed to the National Music Publishers Association. The NMPA lobbies federal legislators and regulators on behalf of music publishers and crafted guidelines for the Copyright Act of 1976.

In September 2001, the NMPA reached a settlement with Napster, turning the company into a fee-based service with publishers licensing music to the users. The NMPA won a judgment against peer-to-peer filing service StreamCast Networks in September 2006. In 2007, NMPA joined a lawsuit against YouTube for hosting user-generated videos containing music under copyright. The suit was dropped four years later.

Music Publishers' Association

The Music Publishers Association of the United States (MPA) is a music publishing organization based in New York City. Founded in 1895, the MPA is the oldest music trade organization in the United States. This non-profit association addresses itself to issues pertaining to print publishing with an emphasis on copyright education and advocacy.

Tab and lyric sites

The position of the MPA is that sites which infringe upon copyright by offering this material for free, without any licensing from the artist or record label, hurt the livelihood of artists and those who stand behind their work. Former MPA president Lauren Keiser has stated that he wanted jail time in addition to fines and the removal of offending websites.

In March 2006, the MPA issued a statement in which they explained their position on websites that distribute unauthorized sheet music and tablature.

Several points are made in the statement.

  • MPA members invest a significant amount into arranging, engraving, editing, marketing, and distributing sheet music products, and illegal tablature cuts into their sales.

    Guoyue

Guoyue (; literally "national music"), in its broadest sense, is any music composed for Chinese musical instruments. It is also referred to variously as minyue (民乐), huayue (華樂) and zhongyue (中樂). In its modernized form, it is often Chinese traditional music written or adapted for some form of grand presentation through a large Chinese orchestra. It is frequently broadcast on radio and television in the People's Republic of China, and it is also the primary form of Chinese music taught in conservatories in China, as well as in Taiwan and Singapore.

    Terms and definitions

    Names

The term guoyue appeared in various ancient texts and had various different meanings before the 20th century. It was used as early as the Sui-Tang period to refer to court music or yayue. In the Music Record section of History of Liao, it was used to distinguish the music of the Khitan rulers from that of the Han Chinese. During the Qing Dynasty it was used to refer to the kind of ceremonial court repertoire that was seen as a representation of China.
