History

February 15, 1906, marked the beginning of banking in Ethiopia when the first Bank of Abyssinia was inaugurated by Emperor Menelik II. It was a private bank whose shares were sold in Addis Ababa, New York, Paris, London, and Vienna. The bank opened numerous branches including ones in Harar (1906), Dire Dawa (1908), Gore (1912), and Dese (1920). One of the first projects the bank financed was the Franco-Ethiopian Railway which reached Addis Ababa in 1917. The bank then opened a transit office in Djibouti in 1920.

In 1931, Emperor Haile Selassie introduced reforms into the banking system The Bank of Abyssinia was liquidated the newly established Bank of Ethiopia, a fully government-owned bank, taking over management, staff and premises of the ceased bank. The Bank of Ethiopia provided central and commercial banking services to the country. The Italian invasion in 1935 brought the demise of one of the earliest initiatives in African banking. During the Italian occupation, Italian banks were active in Ethiopia.

National bank

In banking, the term national bank carries several meanings:

  • especially in developing countries, a bank owned by the state
  • an ordinary private bank which operates nationally (as opposed to regionally or locally or even internationally)
  • in the United States, an ordinary private bank operating within a specific regulatory structure, which may or may not operate nationally, under the supervision of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
  • In the past, the term "national bank" has been used synonymously with "central bank", but it is no longer used in this sense today. Some central banks may have the words "National Bank" in their name; conversely if a bank is named in this way, it is not automatically considered a central bank. For example, National Bank of Canada of Montreal, Canada, is a privately owned commercial bank. On the other side, National Bank of Ethiopia is the central bank of Ethiopia and National Bank of Cambodia is the central bank of Cambodia.

And who said our last silver dollar already has been

I roam alone through rooms we share
You catch a glimpse of who I am
I see that you return my stare
I give you a nod but don?t give you a damn
    No, I don?t give you a damn
And who says we don't like feeling blue?
Cause I must like it as much as I do
And who says we don't use all this feeling blue
To avoid a conversation that might just ring true?
    Might just ring true?
I tend to skip forward to the darkest of my favourite
