National Arts Council

National Arts Council is the name of a number of national bodies which oversee government funding of the arts.

The National Arts Council of Singapore (Abbreviation: NAC; Chinese: 国家艺术理事会; Malay: Majlis Kebudayaan Kebangsaan Singapura) was established in September 1991 "to nurture the arts and make it an integral part of life in Singapore." It was both a development and a censorship agency until 2002, when censorship was assigned to the Media Development Authority. However, the NAC has found ways to keep censoring since then, and has even argued for the need for censorship.

History

In 1989, the Advisory Council on Culture and the Arts, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ong Teng Cheong, produced a report assessing the status of various aspects of arts in Singapore. The report would form the blueprint for cultural policy in Singapore, and led to the establishment of the National Arts Council and National Heritage Board to spearhead the development of arts in singapore.

In 1991, the National Arts Council (NAC) was formed from the amalgamation of the Singapore Cultural Foundation, Cultural Division of Ministry of Community Development, Festival of Arts Secretariat and the National Theatre Trust.

Pakistan National Council of the Arts

Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) was setup to spearhead the development of arts in Pakistan. Its aims to build a robust arts ecosystem by creating an environment conducive to the flourishing of the arts, where the arts are accessible to everyone and artists and art groups have the commitment, financial support and resource and to excel at home, and on the world stage.

Divisions

The Council is structured into four major divisions:

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Division (VAD) was established /set up in 1974 initially named as “Plastic Arts Division”.The Division has two operational components, when initiated;The National Art Gallery (NAG) & Design Section (initially functioning in a residential facility and shifted to its permanent venue in 2007).

Performing Arts

Performing Arts Division of PNCA is mandated for the promotion and preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is engaged in organizing different shows/ programmes representing provincial/ regional cultures/ heritage.
