Resistance (series)

Resistance is a series of first-person shooter and third-person shooter video games developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita video game consoles. The series takes place in an alternate history around the year 1950, in which an alien civilization known as the Chimera have invaded and conquered Earth, expanding their armies by capturing humans and transforming them into monster-like supersoldiers to fight for them. The player takes the role of one of the remaining human armed forces as they fight against the Chimera invasion. The series is noted for its use of both conventional and futuristic weaponry, reflecting Insomniac's previous work on the Ratchet & Clank series. All games in the series have all been rated M by the ESRB.

The characters and related events are described, below, using in-universe tone, so the fictional alien invasion during 1951 is treated as fact rather than fiction, likened to Orson Welles' broadcast of War of the Worlds.

Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale (June 6, 1755 – September 22, 1776) was an American soldier and spy for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission in New York City but was captured by the British and executed. His last words before being hanged were purported to be "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Hale has long been considered an American hero and, in 1985, he was officially designated the state hero of Connecticut.

Background

Nathan Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut in 1755 to Richard Hale and Elizabeth Strong. In 1768, when he was fourteen years old, he was sent with his brother Enoch, who was sixteen, to Yale College. Nathan was a classmate of fellow patriot spy Benjamin Tallmadge. The Hale brothers belonged to the Yale literary fraternity Linonia, which debated topics in astronomy, mathematics, literature, and the ethics of slavery. Nathan graduated with first-class honors in 1773 at age 18 and became a teacher, first in East Haddam and later in New London.

Nathan Hale (fireboat)

The Nathan Hale is an emergency vessel operated by the city of New Haven, Connecticut. She serves both the Fire Department and the Police Department.

When she was launched in 2013 she was New Haven's first fireboat in 20 years. Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Department of Homeland Security created the Port Security Grant Fund to provide smaller ports with emergency vessels.

The Nathan Hale is a 36 foot (11 m) Metal Craft Marine Freedom model, capable of pumping 4800 gallons per minute.

Nathan Hale (colonel)

Nathan Hale (September 23, 1743 – September 23, 1780) was an American soldier. Hale's ancestors were from Ireland of English descent. Born in Hampstead, New Hampshire, he soon moved with his father to Rindge, New Hampshire. Hale participated in the American Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Battle of Bunker Hill, Siege of Fort Ticonderoga, and Battle of Hubbardton. In the last one, Hale was taken prisoner by the British. He died on September 23, 1780.

Service in the American Revolution

In 1774, Hale became the captain of a militia company of minute men. Once Hale was told of the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775, he and his fifty men marched to Cambridge, Massachusetts to join the Army of Observation.

On June 2, 1775, Hale was commissioned as a captain in the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment. They fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. The Army of Observation (consisting of militiamen from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island) had about 2,400 men and the British had over 3,000. The colonies suffered 450 casualties and the British suffered 1,054 casualties in what has been described as a British Pyrrhic victory.

Nathan Hale (statue)

Nathan Hale is an artistic work which was unveiled by the Sons of the American Revolution during the celebration of Evacuation Day (New York), November 25, 1893. It originally stood at the corner of Broadway and Chambers Street in Manhattan. The image of Nathan Hale gazed at passersby in almost the same location, where in 1782, he was hanged by Loyalist partisans during the American Revolution. Standing eight feet tall, the sculpture was created by Frederick William MacMonnies, a pupil of August St. Gaudens. It cost approximately $15,000 when completed and mounted.

The statue was cast in Paris, France and came to the United States a fortnight before its originally planned unveiling date of June 8, 1893. It stood on exhibition in St. Gaudens' studio, 148 West 36th Street, where a pedestal for it was prepared by architect Stanford White. It was placed facing the junction of Broadway and Chambers Street, after the drum-shaped granite pedestal, also eight feet tall, was attached as its stand. The 1782 execution site was as far Uptown, Manhattan as Harlem was in 1893.

Nathan Hale (journalist)

Nathan Hale (16 August 1784 – 9 February 1863) was an American journalist and newspaper publisher who introduced regular editorial comment as a newspaper feature.

Life and career

Born in Westhampton, Massachusetts, Hale graduated from Williams College in 1804, and then was a tutor for two years at Phillips Exeter Academy. He moved to Boston, where he was admitted to the bar in 1810, and practiced law for four years. He began to co-edit The Weekly Messenger in 1813 and founded the Boston Daily Advertiser that same year, serving as editor and publisher until his death in 1863. Hale was one of the founders of the North American Review in 1815 and the Christian Examiner in 1823. In 1842 he was the founding editor of the short-lived The Boston Miscellany. Hale was active in promoting industrial improvement, especially the Boston and Albany Railroad and diverting the Lake Cochituate for potable water in the Back Bay, the Neck and the South Cove.

His alliance to the Federalist Party continued until its dissolution, after which Hale sided with the Whig Party and eventually the Republican Party. He opposed the Missouri Compromise, the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, and Scott v. Sanford. Hale served in the Massachusetts State Legislature.
