Nasi lemak

Nasi lemak is a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is commonly found in Malaysia, where it is considered the national dish, and also popular in neighbouring countries such as Singapore;Indonesia especially in Eastern Sumatra; Brunei and Southern Thailand. Nasi Lemak also can be found in the Southern Philippines prepared by Filipino Muslims, it is considered one of the most famous dishes for Malay-type breakfast. It is not to be confused with nasi dagang sold in the Malaysian east coast states of Terengganu and Kelantan although both dishes can usually be found sold side by side for breakfast. However, because of nasi lemak's versatility in being able to be served in a variety of manners, it is now served and eaten any time of the day.

History

Nasi lemak was mentioned in a book "The Circumstances of Malay Life", written Sir Richard Olof Winstedt in 1909. With roots in Malay culture and Malay cuisine, its name in Malay literally means "oily or fatty rice", but is taken in this context to mean "rich" or "creamy". The name is derived from the cooking process whereby rice is soaked in coconut cream and then the mixture steamed. The rice is normally cooked with pandan leaves that gives it a distinctive flavour.

Nasi Lemak 2.0

Nasi Lemak 2.0 (Chinese: 辣死你妈; pinyin: làsǐnǐmā) is a Malaysian film directed by and starring Wee Meng Chee. The film had a low budget, completed under the absence of government funding. Wee spent nearly a year applying for loans. Wee met the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak and stressed that the movie promoted the spirit of the 1Malaysia program, which was initiated by the Prime Minister himself. Production took about two months including post-editing, and was then handed over to the National Censorship Board. The film premiered on 8 September 2011 in 60 cinemas throughout Malaysia. In an interview with AFP, co-producer Fred Chong said that the movie made more than MYR1.5 million during the first four days of release.

History

On 17 March 2010, Wee Meng Chee, nicknamed Namwee, announced at a small media event that he was going to make a movie. He applied for funds from the Malaysian government, which he recorded on film. After multiple unsuccessful attempts, he vowed to meet the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Instead, he filmed the movie himself with a low budget and requested the government censorship board approval. On 26 June 2011, he announced that the movie would be in theatres on 8 September. Soon after, the trailer was released on his YouTube channel. The movie premiered in Melbourne, Australia, on 31 August, which is also Malaysia's National Day.
