Naomi (novel)

Naomi (痴人の愛, Chijin no Ai, lit. A Fool's Love) is a Japanese novel by Japanese writer Jun'ichirō Tanizaki (1886–1965). Writing of the novel began in 1924, and from March to June, Osaka's Morning News (大阪朝日新聞, Osaka Asahi Shinbun) published the first several chapters of the serial. Four months later, the periodical Female (女性, Josei) started to publish the remaining chapters. Various Japanese and United States publishers have compiled the chapters and published them as a book since 1947.

Narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a salaryman named Jōji, the novel follows his attempt to groom a Eurasian-looking girl, the titular Naomi, to be a Westernized woman. Naomi is a significant work in its comic depiction of Japanese culture of the era and its fascination with the West. The clash between older and newer generations over the more progressive depictions of women, such as Naomi, has been viewed as a clash over Japan's transition into the modern period.

Plot summary

Naomi's story is focused around a man's obsession for a modan garu or modern girl. The main character, Jōji, is a well-educated Japanese man who is an electrical engineer in the city, and comes from a wealthy landlord family. Jōji wishes to break away from his traditional Japanese culture, and becomes immersed in the strange new Westernized culture which was beginning to form in Japan. The physical representation of everything Western is embodied in a young girl named Naomi. Jōji sees Naomi for the first time in a café and instantly falls for her exotic "Eurasian" looks, Western-sounding name, and sophisticated mannerisms. Like the story of the prepubescent Murasaki in the classic novel The Tale of Genji, Jōji decides he will raise Naomi, a fifteen-year-old café hostess, to be his perfect woman: in this case he will forge her into a glamorous Western girl like Mary Pickford, a famous Canadian actress of the silent film era.

Naomi (Singer Songwriter)

Naomi (born 29 June 1996) is a female British singer-songwriter born and raised in Manchester, England, formerly known as Caleidra, who first came to prominence after a song she wrote at school in her music class, led to her being signed to a record label and the release of her first single 'With You' on 24 August 2012. This received national media coverage and Naomi appeared on television programmes such as ITV Daybreak, ITV Granada Reports, radio including BBC Radio Manchester and Salford City Radio, in the national press, The Times, The Independent and The Guardian, teen magazines Mizz and Shout. Her second single was produced by John McLaughlin who previously worked with Busted, 911 (band) and Westlife and led to further appearances in the media, including ITV Granada Reports, further live performances on BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Radio Sheffield, Salford City Radio and during the Manchester International Festival and received impressive media reviews including Music Week.

Naomi Knight

Trinity Fatu (née McCray; born November 30, 1987) is a professional wrestler, model, dancer, and singer. She is currently signed to WWE, where she performs under the ring name Naomi (shortened from Naomi Knight and previously Naomi Night). In 2010, she was part of the third season of NXT, where she came in second place under the tutelage of Kelly Kelly.

In 2012, she joined Cameron Lynn in forming The Funkadactyls. She is featured as one of the main cast members of the Total Divas reality television show. She is a member of the Anoaʻi family, a renowned Samoan-American wrestling dynasty, through her marriage to Jonathan Fatu (better known by the ring name Jimmy Uso).

Early life

McCray was born in Sanford, Florida. She was a cheerleader and dancer for the NBA Orlando Magic basketball team franchise from 2007 to mid-2009. She has also starred as a background dancer for rapper Flo Rida.

On Avery Island is the debut album by American indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. It was released on March 26, 1996 by Merge Records.

Additional information

The title refers to Avery Island, a salt dome island in southern Louisiana, the band's home state. Avery Island is the headquarters of the McIlhenny Company, makers of Tabasco sauce.

The UK version of this CD has two more tracks: "Everything Is" and "Snow Song Pt. 1," both of which are taken from the "Everything Is" single, reportedly without Jeff Mangum's permission. On the vinyl LP, "Pree-Sisters Swallowing a Donkey's Eye" is 3:28 long, as opposed to the significantly longer digital version at 13:49. The UK version also has a different cover, with artwork by Jill Carnes of Thimble Circus.

Moon of Israel is a novel by Rider Haggard, first published in 1918 by John Murray. The novel narrates the events of the Biblical Exodus from Egypt told from the perspective of a scribe named Ana.

Haggard dedicated his novel to Sir Gaston Maspero, a distinguished Egyptologist and director of Cairo Museum.

Adaptation

His novel was the basis of a script by Ladislaus Vajda, for film-director Michael Curtiz in his 1924 Austrian epic known as Die Sklavenkönigin, or "Queen of the Slaves".
