Nana (manga)

Nana (ナナ) is a Japanese Josei manga series written and illustrated by Ai Yazawa, serialized in Cookie published by Shueisha. The manga derives its title from the name of the two main characters, both of whom are called Nana. Nana Komatsu is a small town girl who goes to Tokyo to follow her boyfriend and college friends, with the hope of having her dream life. Nana Osaki was in a popular punk band in her home town. She goes to Tokyo with the goal of making it big as a singer. The two Nanas meet on the train ride to the city. Later, they run into each other again when they happen to check out the same apartment, and the girls decide to become roommates. The series chronicles their friendship and their lives as each chases her dreams.

The author of the manga is sick and is still recovering. It was reported in late April 2010 that she returned home from the hospital and she does not know if or when she will return to work.

Nana is being released in North America by Viz Media. It was serialized in the Shojo Beat until the August 2007 issue, and continues to be released in tankōbon volumes. The manga has also been adapted into a highly successful live-action film with a sequel released on December 9, 2006, and an anime adaptation that premiered on April 5, 2006. The anime adaptation has subsequently been announced as licensed for release in North America by Viz Media.Funimation got the broadcast rights to Viz Media's dub and it premiered on the Funimation Channel on September 19, 2009.

Nana (1926) is Jean Renoir's second full-length silent film and is based on the novel by Émile Zola.

Plot

A government official, Count Muffat, falls under the spell of Nana, a young actress. She becomes his mistress, living in the sumptuous apartment which he provides for her. Instead of elevating herself to Muffat's level, however, Nana drags the poor man down to hers - in the end, both lives have been utterly destroyed.

Production

The film stars Renoir’s wife, Catherine Hessling, in an eccentric performance as the flawed heroine Nana.

Jean Renoir’s film is a fairly faithful adaptation of Émile Zola’s classic novel. The film’s extravagances include two magnificent set pieces – a horse race and an open air ball. The film never made a profit, and the commercial failure of the film robbed Renoir of the opportunity to make such an ambitious film again for several years.

Ulmus 'Nana'

The elm cultivar Ulmus 'Nana' is a very slow growing shrub that with time forms a small tree. It was believed for many years to be a form of Ulmus glabra and is known widely as the 'Dwarf Wych Elm'. However, the ancestry of 'Nana' has been disputed in more recent years, Melville considering the specimen once grown at Kew to have been a cultivar of Ulmus × hollandica.

Description

The tree rarely exceeds 5 m in height, but is often broader. The dark green leaves are smaller than the type, < 11 cm long by 8 cm broad. Green describes it as a very distinct variety not growing above 60 cm in 10 to 12 years. A specimen at Kew was described by Henry as 'a slow-growing hemispherical bush that has not increased appreciably in size for many years'.

The low height of the tree should ensure that it avoids colonisation by Scolytus bark beetles and thus remain free of Dutch elm disease.

Cultivation

The tree is still occasionally found in arboreta and gardens in the UK, and has been introduced to North America and continental Europe; it is not known in Australasia.

History of the channel

AB Cartoons was launched in 1996 as a youth channel on the AB Sat package. It showed Japanese animation (anime) already shown on Club Dorothée on TF1.

Due to the popularity of the genre with young adults and teens, and criticism of the violence shown in the programmes, the channel was renamed Mangas, on 1 September 1998 using the logo of the magazine D.MANGAS (the former Dorothée Magazine, although the show on TF1 had ended in 1997).
