Nador

Nador (Berber: Ennaḍor, ⴻⵏⵏⴰⴹⵓⵔ; Arabic: الناظور) is a city located in the northeastern Rif region of Morocco, situated on the salt lagoon of Sebkha Bou Areq. The city is a Mediterranean port on the Bḥar Ameẓẓyan lagoon (Mar Chica in Spanish), and it is the major trading center in the region for fish, fruit, and livestock. It is linked to the Spanish city of Melilla, 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) to the north, by a semi-motorway. The city has a population of about 200,000 inhabitants. Nador is the provincial capital for the Nador Province in the Moroccan Oriental Region. Just eight miles from Melilla, it is recognized as a border town with a Spanish atmosphere, environment and architecture. Nador is believed to be founded as a small village by the Amazigh Riffian people in the 19th century, but has later been ruled by the Spaniards, until Morocco’s independence in 1956.

The Nador province is populated by a Riff-Berber population of more than 600,000 inhabitants. Nador city became the administrative center of the province in 1956.
