NTL Incorporated
National Transcommunications Limited (Headquarters Crawley Court, Winchester), commonly known as NTL, was brought into being when the IBA's engineering department was privatised and bought by Mercury Asset Management in 1992. The Home Office Directorate of Telecommunications was formed into a company in 1993 and privatised being bought by NTL in 1994 to expand and assist in the operation of a number of contracts including the coastguard and RNLI.
Engineering development led to the implementation of the first national SDH ring providing an excellent method of program distribution which aroused the interest of American Cable TV company Cabletel.
The company was acquired, keeping the name NTL which was widely recognised in the engineering community and an aggressive program undertaken to aquire a number of cable TV companies including Yorkshire cable and others leading up to the acquisition of Cable and Wireless. Home division. At this point the company was rebranded as ntl:, a U.S.-listed British company founded in 1992, which provided cable television, cable internet and fixed-line cable telephone services. While NTL has its headquarters in New York City, the company's activities focus heavily on the United Kingdom, with operational headquarters in Hook, Hampshire.
