Niso

Niso is a genus of very small parasitic sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks or micromollusks in the family Eulimidae.

Nickel(II) sulfate

Nickel(II) sulfate, or just nickel sulfate, usually refers to the inorganic compound with the formula NiSO₄(H₂O)₆. This highly soluble blue-coloured salt is a common source of the Ni²⁺ion for electroplating.

Approximately 40,000 tonnes were produced in 2005. It is mainly used for electroplating of nickel.

In 2005–06, nickel sulfate was the top allergen in patch tests (19.0%).

Structures

At least seven sulfate salts of nickel(II) are known. These salts differ in terms of their hydration or crystal habit.

The common tetragonal hexahydrate crystallizes from aqueous solution between 30.7 and 53.8 °C. Below these temperatures, a heptahydrate crystallises, and above these temperatures an orthorhombic hexahydrate forms. The yellow anhydrous form, NiSO₄, is a high melting solid that is rarely encountered in the laboratory. This material is produced by heating the hydrates above 330 °C. It decomposes at still higher temperatures to nickel oxide.

X-ray crystallography measurements show that NiSO₄·6H₂O consists of the octahedral [Ni(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ions. These ions in turn are hydrogen bonded to sulfate ions. Dissolution of the salt in water gives solutions containing the aquo complex [Ni(H₂O)₆]²⁺.

National Information Standards Organization

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is a United States non-profit standards organization that develops, maintains and publishes technical standards related to publishing, bibliographic and library applications. It was founded in 1939, incorporated as a not-for-profit education association in 1983, and assumed its current name in 1984.

Organization

NISO offers two membership categories, "voting members" and "library standards alliance". In 2013, the "voting members" included 69 large corporations, mostly publishers, and large library organizations such as the American Library Association. Voting members elect Directors and comment and vote on standards. The "Library Standards Alliance" included 101 members, primarily university and large public libraries. Library members receive free access to NISO webinars.

Todd Carpenter was appointed Executive Director of NISO in 2006. Gerry Grenier from IEEE is Chair of NISO in 2014-2015. Heather Reid from the Copyright Clearance Center was Chair in 2013-2014.
