National Electrical Code

The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a regionally adoptable standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States. It is part of the National Fire Codes series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a private trade association. Despite the use of the term "national", it is not a federal law. It is typically adopted by states and municipalities in an effort to standardize their enforcement of safe electrical practices. In some cases, the NEC is amended, altered and may even be rejected in lieu of regional regulations as voted on by local governing bodies.

The "authority having jurisdiction" inspects for compliance with these minimum standards.

Background

The NEC is developed by NFPA's Committee on the National Electrical Code, which consists of 19 (20 in 2008) code-making panels and a technical correlating committee. Work on the NEC is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. The NEC is approved as an American national standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It is formally identified as ANSI/NFPA 70.

NFPA 805

NFPA 805 was introduced in 2001 by the National Fire Protection Association to provide a performance based standard for fire protection in light water reactor electric generating plants.

There are Currently 4 editions with a 5th planned for release in 2020. The editions are as follows 2001, 2006, 2010, 2015(current), 2020(future).

NFPA 805 meets the Alternate Fire protection rule from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission 10CFR50.48(c).

NFPA 1123

NFPA 1123, subtitled Code for Fireworks Display is a code administered, copyrighted, and published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). NFPA 1123 is the registered trademark of an American consensus standard which, like many NFPA documents, is systematically revised on a three year cycle.

The standard, despite its title, is not a legal code, it is not published as an instrument of law and has no statutory authority unless adopted by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). The standard, widely adopted in the United States, is however deliberately crafted with language suitable for mandatory application to facilitate adoption into law by those empowered to do so.
