NET 5

NET 5 is a Dutch commercial TV channel owned by SBS Broadcasting B.V., formerly a part of SBS Broadcasting Group and now owned by Sanoma Media Netherlands (67%) and Talpa Media Holding (33%). Other channels of the group in the Netherlands are SBS6 and Veronica.

History

Net 5 was launched by the SBS Broadcasting Group as their second commercial channel in the Netherlands next to SBS6. The head of SBS was Fons van Westerloo who left the company to work until 31 January 2008 to head the main competitor RTL Nederland (part of the RTL Group). Van Westerloo announced the new broadcast on 4 December 1998. It was supposed to become a commercial version of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting. Net 5 was launched on 1 March 1999 and the first broadcast was the film Braveheart.

Since there were not that many commercial channels at the time, the Net 5 brand was partly chosen to compete directly with the RTL 5 channel. The goal was for viewers to put Net 5 on position 5 of their remote control settings instead of the older channel RTL 5. But research showed that more people would place RTL 5 on five, and NET 5 on position nine.

NET5 is a Morning News Program which contains news, short features and depth feature. Each feature, contains a variety of stories that inspire, spread the positive things, motivating and encouraging. NET5 will be dominated by news and hardnews abroad news feature. Created and broadcast by NET. starts at 05.00 AM till 06.00 AM, followed by Indonesia Morning Show

NET is the largest cable television operator in Latin America. The company's Net service (cable TV) had around 5.4 million subscribers as of Q2 2012. Net also operates the broadband internet service Net Vírtua, with 4.9 million subscribers as of Q2 2012 and telephone over cable (under the Net Fone via Embratel name) with more than 2.5 million subscribers.

History

NET was started in 1991 by Brazil's Roberto Marinho family's part of their Rede Globo empire. In March 2005, Embratel, a subsidiary of Mexico's Telmex, took a controlling stake in NET, paying 570 million reais.

Net Serviços' stock is traded on Bovespa, where it is part of the Ibovespa index is over.

The company announced in late 2006 that it would buy Vivax, then the nation's second-largest cable company. The transaction was approved in May 2007 and completed in June 2007. Rollout of the Net brand in Vivax areas was completed in December 2007.

On 10 August 2010, NET became the first cable operator in Brazil to offer all the Discovery Latin America channels: Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Kids, People+Arts, Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Science, Discovery Civilization, Discovery Turbo, HD Theater and TLC.
