NBC News

NBC News is a division of the American broadcast network NBC. The division operates under NBCUniversal News Group, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal. The group's various operations report to the president of NBC News, Deborah Turness.

NBC News aired the first news program in American broadcast television history on February 21, 1940. The group's broadcasts are produced and aired from 30 Rockefeller Center, NBC's headquarters in New York.

The division presides over America's number-one-rated newscast,NBC Nightly News, and the longest-running television series in American history, Meet The Press. NBC News also offers 70 years of rare historic footage from the NBCUniversal Archives online.

History

Caravan era

The first American television newscast in history was made by NBC News on February 21, 1940, anchored by Lowell Thomas and airing weeknights at 6:45 p.m. In June 1940, NBC, through its flagship station in New York City, W2XBS (renamed commercial WNBT in 1941, now WNBC) operating on channel one, televised 30¼ hours of coverage of the Republican National Convention live and direct from Philadelphia. The station used a series of relays from Philadelphia to New York and on to upper New York State, for rebroadcast on W2XB in Schenectady (now WRGB), making this among the first "network" programs of NBC Television. Due to wartime restrictions, there were no live telecasts of the 1944 conventions, although films of the events were reportedly shown over WNBT the next day.

News broadcasting

News broadcasting is the medium of broadcasting of various news events and other information via television, radio or internet in the field of broadcast journalism. The content is usually either produced locally in a radio studio or television studio newsroom, or by a broadcast network. It may also include additional material such as sports coverage, weather forecasts, traffic reports, commentary and other material that the broadcaster feels is relevant to their audience.

Television news

Television news refers to disseminating current events via the medium of television. A "news bulletin" or a "newscast" are television programs lasting from seconds to hours that provide updates on world, national, regional or local news events. There are numerous providers of broadcast news content such as NBC, CNN or Fox News, as well as numerous programs that regularly provide this content such as NBC Nightly News. Television news is very image-based, showing video footage of many of the events that are reported; still photography is also used in reporting news stories, although not as much in recent years as in the early days of broadcast television. Television channels may provide news bulletins as part of a regularly scheduled news program. Less often, television shows may be interrupted or replaced by breaking news reports ("news flashes") to provide news updates on events of great importance.

WICS

WICS is the ABC-affiliated television station for Springfield/Decatur, Illinois. It broadcasts a high definition digital signal on UHF channel 42 (or virtual channel 20.1 via PSIP) from a transmitter, in unincorporated Sangamon County, south of Dawson and I-72/U.S. 36. Owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, the station operates Fox affiliate WRSP (its semi-satellite, WCCU) as well as CW outlet WBUI (all owned by GOCOM Media, LLC) through joint sales and shared services agreements. All of the stations share studios together on East Cook Street in Springfield's Eastside. However, WBUI also operates an advertising sales office on South Main Street/U.S. 51 in Downtown Decatur.

WICD in Champaign/Urbana operates as a full-time satellite of WICS to serve the eastern portion of the market. WICD airs the same broadcast schedule as its parent station but features separate legal identifications and local commercial inserts. Although the station maintains its own studios on South Country Fair Drive in Downtown Champaign, master control and most internal operations are based within WICS' facilities. WCCU's advertising sales operation is based out of WICD's studios.
