North American Science Fiction Convention

NASFiC, a.k.a. the North American Science Fiction Convention, is a science fiction convention scheduled only during years where the Worldcon is being held outside the North American continent. NASFiC bids voted on by the Worldcon (or NASFiC if one exists) membership the year after a non-North American Worldcon site has been selected. As of 2014, this is one year in advance of a potential NASFiC.

History

Activities at a NASFiC parallel those seen at Worldcon, but may differ with each convention committee. The convention may be held as an individual event or in conjunction with another convention. It generally occurs near the time of the Worldcon, but not in direct competition with it. Eleven NASFiCs have occurred to date. The name NASFiC is owned by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS).

The late Robert Sacks led a movement to separate NASFiC from the World Science Fiction Society, similar to Eurocon, but WSFS has chosen to keep NASFiC under its own aegis.

NASFiC (1975)

NASFiC, held in Los Angeles, California, on Labor Day weekend 1975, at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott, was the first North American Science Fiction Convention. "NASFiC" was an initialism for North American Science Fiction Convention. This "Continental Convention", the first of its kind, was held because Melbourne, Australia, was selected as the location for the 1975 Worldcon.

    Site selection

After the 1975 Worldcon was awarded to a site in Australia, Los Angeles was chosen as the site for the first Continental Convention at Torcon II, the 31st World Science Fiction Convention, in Toronto, Canada. The bid led by Chuck Crayne defeated a bid led by Bruce Pelz, also for Los Angeles in 1975, at an "unofficial" site selection meeting.

  • Chair: Chuck Crayne
  • Events

Johnny Weismuller, Buster Crabbe, Jock Mahoney, and James Pierce—four of the actors to have portrayed Tarzan—participated in a "Tarzan Club" reunion as part of a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs' birth. Several of the actresses that have portrayed Jane, including Eve Brent, Joyce MacKenzie, and Louise Lorraine, were also part of the celebration.

    ReConStruction

ReConStruction was the tenth occasional North American Science Fiction Convention. It was held in Raleigh, North Carolina, on August 5–8, 2010, at the Raleigh Convention Center, Marriott City Center, and the Downtown Raleigh Sheraton. This NASFiC was held because Melbourne, Australia, was selected as the location for the 2010 Worldcon.

    Site selection

After "Australia in 2010" was selected as the World Science Fiction Convention to be held in 2010 (as "Aussiecon 4" in Melbourne), the WSFS Business Meeting directed that a written ballot election be held at Anticipation, the then-upcoming Worldcon in Montreal, Canada, to select a NASFiC site for 2010. Raleigh's bid was certified as the winner with 241 votes out of 276 cast and 3 invalid submissions. Although formally unopposed, the Raleigh bid was not the only location to receive the attention of the voters. Pasadena, California, received 19 votes, Durham, North Carolina, and Ridgecrest, California, each received 1 vote, and joke votes were cast for "Peggy Rae's House" and the fictional planet "Xerps".
