N. U. Prabhu

Narahari Umanath Prabhu (born April 25, 1924 in Kozhikode) is an Indian-American mathematician, known for his contributions to operation research, in particular queueing theory.

Career

Prabhu a Goud Saraswat Brahmin from Mangalore and Kozhikode got his B.A. in mathematics from University of Madras (1946), an M.A. in statistics from University of Bombay (1950). Prabhu did the pioneering work of establishing the department of statistics, Karnatak University, Dharwar in 1951. He obtained an M.Sc. in mathematics from University of Manchester on a thesis entitled Solution to Some Dam Problems (1957).

Prabhu lectured at Gauhati University (1950–52), Karnatak University (1952–61), University of Western Australia (1961–64), before becoming associate professor at University of Michigan (1964–65) and Cornell University (1965–94) where he became professor (1967) and emeritus (1994). Prabhu also had longer research stays at Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta (1961), University of Wisconsin–Madison (1970, 73), Technion in Haifa (1973), University of Melbourne (1978), University of Maryland, College Park (1979), and Uppsala University (1984).

Nǁng language

Nǁng or Nǁŋǃke, commonly known by its primary dialect Nǀuu (Nǀhuki), is a moribund Tuu (Khoisan) language once spoken in South Africa. It is no longer spoken on a daily basis, as the speakers live in different villages. The dialect name ǂKhomani is used for the entire people by the South African government, but the descendents of ǂKhomani-dialect speakers now speak Khoekhoe. As of January 2013, only three speakers of Nǀuu and two of ǁ’Au remain.

Classification and name

Nǁng belongs to the Tuu (Taa–ǃKwi) language family, with extinct ǀXam being its closest relative and Taa its closest living relative.

The two recent dialects are Nǀuu (Nǀhuki) and ǁ’Au (ǁKh’au). Extinct dialects include ǂKhomani and Langeberg. ǂKhomani had been recorded by Doke and by Maingard, Nǀhuki by Weshphal, and Langeberg by Dorothea Bleek. As of 2010, most remaining speakers spoke Nǀuu dialect, and this was the name Nǁng appeared under when it was rediscovered. However, two spoke ǁ’Au and rejected the label Nǀuu.

N.U. (film)

N.U. (short for Nettezza urbana, Italian municipal cleansing service) is a short 1948 documentary film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. The film examines a weekday morning of Italian janitors, captured at work on the streets of post-WWII Rome.

Although undoubtedly neorealistic in its style, this documentary does foreshadow some of Antonioni's own future trademarks, such as slow-moving camera that is enamoured with alienated and deserted urban landscapes and inanimate objects of architecture, nature, etc. and seemingly less than concerned with sweepers, washers and cleaners (almost indistinguishable from bums, and sometimes behaving much in the same way). The film's narration consists of barely several phrases; musically soundtrack alternates classical-like piano improvisations with jazzy pieces.

In 1948 N.U. won Antonioni Nastro d'Argento Best Documentary award. So did his L'amorosa menzogna next year.
