Ruin (publishing house)

Ruin is a Swedish publishing house, well known for high quality books, mostly translations from various languages. It was established in 1996 by Harald Hultqvist, Nils Håkanson, Carl Ehrenkrona, Jon Smedsaas and Staffan Vahlquist. Ruin has presented internationally acclaimed writers in Swedish translation, such as Varlam Shalamov, Yu Hua, Nancy Huston, Andrei Volos, Bohumil Hrabal, Yevgeny Zamyatin and Joseph Roth.

Ruin is the second studio album by British metalcore band Architects. This was the first album to feature the vocalist Sam Carter and bassist Alex Dean.

Style

Stylistically, this album displays a minor change in the band's style, with a more fluid metalcore sound. Clean vocals are implemented again in a few songs, to a larger extent than on Nightmares, although not as prominently as in later releases. The album features a change in guitar tuning, from drop C (which was used on Nightmares) to drop B, for all tracks, except "Low", which features the same tuning as drop B, but with the low B tuned to F# (the bass string on an eight string guitar).

Ruin was the first Architects album to feature new vocalist Sam Carter. His vocal style is quite different to that of previous vocalist Matt Johnson, marking a shift from screaming towards hardcore punk-style shouting. This is most obvious on the 2008 re-recording of "To the Death" (from Nightmares) that was available for download for a short period.

Professor Hamilton

Professor Emil Hamilton is a fictional character in DC Comics' Superman titles. He was created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway. He is generally portrayed as a stereotypical absent-minded professor, with a gray beard and thick glasses and, at times, a "Mr. Wizard" type character. However, recent versions of the character have been more villainous as he begins to see Superman as a potential threat to the world. The character was named after Edmond Hamilton, who wrote stories about Superman and other characters from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Fictional character biography

He first appeared in Adventures of Superman #424, as an apparent villain, using his gadgets to attack Superman in an attempt to gain funding by proving that they worked. A former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs and the US Government, it transpired he had been driven insane when all his research was bought up by Lex Luthor, who took credit for the inventions. He was placed in a mental health facility and responded well to treatment. On his release, he set up a laboratory in Suicide Slum and quickly became Superman's "scientific advisor", eking out a general living as a technical consultant. He was responsible for creating many devices that aided Superman, including the Phantom Zone Projector and early Superman Robots, as well as helping Superman during such problems as the 'Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite', when Red Kryptonite created by Mister Mxyzptlk shut down Superman's powers; until Superman's powers were restored, Hamilton provided him with various machinery such as a force field belt and an armoured suit to allow him to continue as a hero. Later, another force field belt Emil provides allows Superman to get around the power-blocking talents of the artificial life forms 'Psi-Phon' and 'Dreadnaught'.

Unite! (Ayumi Hamasaki song)

"Unite!" is the twenty-third single by Ayumi Hamasaki, released on July 11, 2001. It is her sixth single released in Germany.

Unlike most of her other A-sides and some of her B-sides, Unite! has no PV. It has been performed on various occasions and has been featured on a commercial, yet no promotional video was ever aired.

Unite (English coin)

The Unite was the second English gold coin with a value of twenty shillings or one pound first produced during the reign of King James I. It was named after the legends on the coin indicating the king's intention of uniting his two kingdoms of England and Scotland. The unite was valued at twenty shillings until 1612 when the increase in the value of gold throughout Europe caused it to be raised to twenty-two shillings. The coin was produced during James I's second coinage (1604–1619), and it was replaced in the third coinage by the Laurel worth twenty shillings. All the coins were produced at the Tower Mint in London.

Several busts of the king were used for this denomination, who is shown looking to the right of the coin and is holding the orb and sceptre; the style of the king's beard varies during the issue. The legend on the obverse reads IACOBUS D G MA BRI FRA ET HI REX (Iacobus Deo Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex)-- James by the grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland. The reverse shows a crowned shield which shows the arms of the four countries separating the letters IR -- Iacobus Rex, King James, and the legend FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM ("I will make them one nation", from Ezekiel 37:22).
