Myakka City, Florida

Myakka City (also Miakka, Miakka City, or Myakka) is an unincorporated community in southeastern Manatee County, Florida, United States. It lies along State Road 70 near the city of Bradenton, the county seat of Manatee County. Its elevation is 43 feet (13 m), and it is located at 27°20′59″N 82°9′41″W / 27.34972°N 82.16139°W / 27.34972; -82.16139Coordinates: 27°20′59″N 82°9′41″W / 27.34972°N 82.16139°W / 27.34972; -82.16139 (27.3497671, -82.1614780). Although Myakka is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 34251; the ZCTA for ZIP code 34251 had a population of 6,351 at the 2010 census. up from 4,239 at the 2000 census.

History

A post office called Myakka City has been in operation since 1915. Myakka is a name believed to be derived from an unidentified Native American language.

Myakka soil is the official state soil of Florida, where more than 1,500,000 acres (6,100 km²) contain Myakka soils. Its name originates from a Native American pronunciation of "Big Waters". This poorly drained soil is primarily located in broad flatwoods in irregular area shapes ranging from 5 to 500 acres in size. The organic matter content and fertility of the soil is low. Most areas where this soil occurs are native range or improved pasture, although some is used for citrus or vegetable farming. Some counties in Florida where this soil occurs are: Hendry, Collier, Glades, and Lee.

Myakka soils originate from marine deposits and are a key component of Floridian flatwoods. They are also occur in tidal areas, depressions, and barrier islands. Myakka soils' slope ranges from 0 to 8 percent.

Soil Profile

This soil typically has a very dark gray sand surface layer between 5 to 6 inches thick, and then a subsurface layer to about 26 inches composed of gray sand.

The subsoil to about 60 inches is sand that is stained with organic matter; black in the upper part and dark brown in the lower part.
