Mutt (album)

MUTT is an album by Roots music band Lost Dogs, released on Fools of the World and Lo-Fidelity Records in 2004.

For this record, the band decided to take songs - 3 songs each - from each of their regular bands and redo them Lost Dogs style. Roe brought The 77s songs "It's So Sad" (from 1983's Ping Pong Over the Abyss) and "The Lust, The Flesh, The Eyes and the Pride of Life" (from 1984's The 77s) and his own solo track "Sunshine Down" (from 2001's Say Your Prayers). Daugherty brought along the Choir songs, "Like A Cloud" (from 1994's Speckled Bird) and "To Cover You" (from 1987's Wide Eyed Wonder), plus the modern hymn "Beautiful Scandalous Night." Taylor brought the Daniel Amos songs "If You Want To" (from 1991's Kalhoun), "Grace Is The Smell of Rain" (from 1993's MotorCycle) and, the first song D.A. ever recorded, "'Aint Gonna Fight It." The trio then added one new track to the end of the record, "I'm Setting You Free (But I'm Not Letting You Go)."

Instead of simply recreating the original performances, each song was given a facelift with different singers taking over the lead vocals. For example, Roe & Daugherty would tackle the D.A songs, and Taylor and Daugherty would sing the 77s tracks. The song that perhaps received the most noticeable rearrangement was the 77's "It's So Sad," which was turned into a rockabilly tune.

! (album)

! is an album by The Dismemberment Plan. It was released on October 2, 1995, on DeSoto Records. The band's original drummer, Steve Cummings, played on this album but left shortly after its release.

"@" (album)

"@" is a studio album by John Zorn and Thurston Moore. It is the first collaborative album by the duo and was recorded in New York City in February, 2013 and released by Tzadik Records in September 2013. The album consists of improvised music by Zorn and Moore that was recorded in the studio in real time with no edits or overdubs.

Reception

Allmusic said "@ finds two of New York City's longest-running fringe dwellers churning out sheets of collaborative sounds that conjoin their respective and distinct states of constant freak-out... These seven improvisations sound inspired without feeling at all heavy-handed or urgent. More so, @ succeeds with the type of conversational playing that could only be achieved by two masters so deep into their craft that it probably feels a lot like breathing to them by now".

Album

Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, then from 1948 as vinyl LP records played at 33 ¹⁄₃ rpm. Vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century albums sales have mostly focused on compact disc (CD) and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used in the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl.

An album may be recorded in a recording studio (fixed or mobile), in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to several years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately, and then brought or "mixed" together. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed "live", even when done in a studio. Studios are built to absorb sound, eliminating reverberation, so as to assist in mixing different takes; other locations, such as concert venues and some "live rooms", allow for reverberation, which creates a "live" sound. The majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at separate times while listening to the other parts using headphones; with each part recorded as a separate track.

Mongrel

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding. Estimates place the number of mongrels at 150 million animals.

Terminology

Mixed-breed vs. crossbreed

Like mongrels/mixed breeds, crossbred dogs belong to no one recognized breed. Unlike mixed-breeds, however, crossbred dogs are often the product of artificial selection – intentionally created by humans, whereas the term "mongrel" specifically refers to dogs that develop by natural selection, without planned intervention of humans.

Mixed breed vs. mongrel

In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among some experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
