Munster, Indiana

Munster is a town located in North Township, Lake County, in Northwest Indiana, United States. This bedroom community lies in the Chicago metropolitan area, approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of the Chicago Loop, and shares municipal boundaries with Hammond to the north, Highland to the east, Dyer and Schererville to the south and Lansing and Lynwood directly west of the Illinois border. The 2010 U.S. Census counted the town's population at 23,603.

Geography

Munster is located at 41°33′5″N 87°30′5″W / 41.55139°N 87.50139°W / 41.55139; -87.50139 (41.551457, -87.501431), at a point on an ancient shoreline of Lake Michigan (known as the Calumet Shoreline) which is today Ridge Road. This ridge runs east and west through the north part of town, hence the town's nickname "Town on the Ridge".

The town's boundaries contain three small lakes, one of which, located within Centennial Park, is marshy and undeveloped. Munster is bordered on the north by the Little Calumet River, a shallow river surrounded by a thin strip of wooded area; and on the west by the Illinois state line.

Munster

Munster (Irish: an Mhumhain / Cúige Mumhan, pronounced [ə ˈvuːnʲ], [ˌkuːgʲə ˈmuːn]) is one of the provinces of Ireland situated in the south of Ireland. In early Ireland, it was one of the "fifths" ruled by a "king of over-kings" Irish: rí ruirech. Following the Norman invasion of Ireland, the ancient kingdoms were shired into a number of counties for administrative and judicial purposes. In later centuries, local government legislation has seen further sub-division of the historic counties.

Munster has no official function for local government purposes. For the purposes of the ISO, the province is listed as one of the provincial sub-divisions of the State (ISO 3166-2:IE) and coded as "IE-M". Geographically, Munster covers a total area of 24,675 km² (9,527 sq mi) and has a population of 1,246,088 with the most populated city being Cork. Other significant urban centres in the province include Limerick and Waterford.

Geography

Münster is located between Rain and Thierhaupten. The village is separated in a lower an a higher part, because it's built on the Lechrain.

Coat of arms

On the coat of arms of Münster in the lower part a swung line, representing the river Lech, is drawn on red and silver ground. The key and sword stand for the two patron saints of the local parish St. Peter and Paul.

Munster cheese

Munster (French pronunciation: ​[mœ̃stɛʁ]) or Munster-géromé, is a strong tasting, soft cheese made mainly from milk from the Vosges, between Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté in France. Munster is derived from the Alsace town of Munster, where, among Vosgian abbeys and monasteries, the cheese was conserved and matured in monks' cellars.

History of the cheese

This cheese originated in the Admodiation, an area on the top of the Vosgian mountains, named Chaumes" or "Les grandes Chaumes" (comitatus Calvomontensis). Calvomontensis is the Latin word that describes mountaintops without woods.

As early as 1371, and possibly before, these territories were occupied by cattle herds driven by men, called "marcaires", pastured there between May and September. When the herds returned to their valleys, the cattle herdsmen first paid the fees and tithes to the religious and political owners of the summer pastures or simply financiers of these migrations. During feudal times these owners possessed all goods, living creatures, rights of pasture and cattle. Those who herded were known as serfs.

Indiana ⁱ/ɪndiˈænə/ is a U.S. state located in the midwestern and Great Lakes regions of North America. Indiana is the 38th largest by area and the 16th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. Indiana was admitted to the United States as the 19th U.S. state on December 11, 1816.

Before becoming a territory, varying cultures of indigenous peoples and historic Native Americans inhabited Indiana for thousands of years. Indiana (horse)

Indiana (1961–14 June 1983) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from autumn 1963 until July 1965 he ran thirteen times and won four races. He won the Classic St Leger as a three-year-old in 1964, the same year in which he also won the Chester Vase and the Great Voltigeur Stakes. Indiana also finished second in the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. He retired from racing and exported in 1966 to stand as a stallion in the Japan. He died in 1983.

Background

Indiana was a bay horse who stood 15.3 hands high bred in Ireland by F. F. Tuthill. He was sired by the St Leger winner Sayajirao out of the mare Willow Ann. Willow Ann never raced but was a success as a broodmare: in addition to Indiana, she also produced the Belmont Stakes winner Cavan. Indiana was a small and unprepossessing yearling and when he was sent to the Newmarket sales he has bought for 5,000 guineas by the London Bloodstock Agency on behalf of Charles Engelhard.
