Munger district

Munger district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state in eastern India. Munger city is the administrative headquarters of this district. Munger district is a part of Munger Division. Its literacy rate of 73.3% is higher than the state literacy rate of 63.8% and lower than national rate of 74.04

Etymology

The district is named after its headquarters, Munger. There are several traditions regarding the etymology of Munger. According to one tradition, the present name of the town is derived from its ancient name Mudgagiri, which is mentioned in the Mahbharata as well as the Munger copperlate inscription of Devapala. According to another tradition, the name of the town is derived from either sage Mudgala or Maudgalyayana, a disciple of Buddha. However, General Cunnigham had strong suspicion that the original name of the town was connected with the Mundas, who are the earliest residents of this region and C.E.A. Oldham thinks it was probably derived from Munigriha (the abode of the Muni).

Munger

Munger (Angika and Hindi:मुंगेर) is a twin city and a Municipal Corporation situated in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the administrative headquarters of Munger district and Munger Division.It is the 5th largest city of Bihar and 2nd largest city in Eastern Bihar.

Historically, Munger is known for being an ancient seat of rule. The twin city comprises Munger and Jamalpur situated on the southern bank of the river Ganges. It is situated 60 km west of Bhagalpur, and 180 km east of capital city Patna.

Climate

The climate of Munger is subtropical (warm in summer and cold during winter). The Köppen climate classification sub-type for this climate is humid subtropical.

Demographics

As per 2011 census, Munger Municipal Corporation had a total population of 3,88,000, out of which 2,00,000 were males and 1,88,000 were females. It had a sex ratio of 883. The population below 5 years was 42,260. The literacy rate of the 7+ population was 81.83 per cent.

Munger (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (Hindi: राजापाकर विधान सभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र) is an assembly constituency in Munger district in the Indian state of Bihar. In Bihar Legislative Assembly election, 2015, Munger will be one of the 36 seats to have VVPAT enabled electronic voting machines.

In the 2010 state assembly elections, ANANT KUMAR SATYARTHY of JD(U) won the assembly seat.
