"Moving On Up (On the Right Side)" is the fourth single released by British R&B singer-songwriter Beverley Knight, taken from her debut album The B-Funk (1995). It was written by Westley and produced by The Ethnic Boyz. The song contains a sample of "You're Too Good To Me" by the soul musician Curtis Mayfield, which was also sampled by American singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige on her single "Be Happy" for her second album My Life (1994). Both songs were recorded in 1994.

"Moving On Up (On the Right Side)" peaked at #42 on the UK Singles Chart when it was released in March 1996 as a single. The song did not have a promotional video made to accompany the release but it received support from urban radio which helped the release chart inside the top 75. The single is one of the few original recordings (excluding cover versions) released by Knight to date that she did not write herself.

Knight most recently performed "Moving On Up (On the Right Side)" on her Soul UK tour as part of a medley.

Moving On Up (M People song)

Moving on Up is the seventh overall single from British band M People and the second single from their second album, Elegant Slumming (1993). Written by Mike Pickering and Paul Heard and produced by M People, it was released on 13 September 1993. The song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and was the biggest selling M People single.

Background

Previous single "One Night in Heaven" had garnered the band a massive-selling summer hit single with both sustained radio airplay and critical acclaim. As another precursor to the highly anticipated album Elegant Slumming, they would release another classic song with a feel good, radio-friendly vibe.

Composition

"Moving on Up" is an uptempo dance-pop and house song with elements of disco, and follows in the footstep of previous single "One Night in Heaven" although this time with much more a sassier, angry edge. It has a harder edge focusing on the end of a relationship from the perspective of a spurned lover. The song was recorded at The Roundhouse Studios in Chalk Farm, London. The backing vocals during the chorus is sung by vocalist Juliet Roberts who was featured prominently on the last single.

Jimmy Eat World is an American rock band from Mesa, Arizona, that formed in 1993. The band is composed of lead vocalist and guitarist Jim Adkins, guitarist and backing vocalist Tom Linton, bassist Rick Burch and drummer Zach Lind. As of June 2013, Jimmy Eat World have released eight studio albums, the last seven featuring the current lineup.

The four piece's commercial breakthrough came with the successful release of several singles from the album Bleed American (2001). Four singles from the album charted within the top twenty positions of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, with "The Middle" reaching the number one position. Jimmy Eat World's follow-up album Futures (2004) featured another Modern Rock Tracks number one song, "Pain". The RIAA certified Bleed American platinum and Futures gold, rewarding the two albums for selling over one and a half million records between them. The band's sixth album Chase This Light (2007) became the band's highest charting album, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200.

Jimmy Eat World is the debut studio album by American rock band Jimmy Eat World, released in 1994 on Wooden Blue Records. The album displays their early sound with guitarist and eventual backing vocalist Tom Linton singing lead on most of the songs on this album. The one song on this album that is sung by current primary vocalist Jim Adkins is the track, "Usery". The album also marks the only appearance of former bass guitarist Mitch Porter.

Jimmy Eat World is currently out of print. The album cover is an old picture of Linton's younger brothers Jim and Ed, from whom the band's name originated.

Reception

In 2012, The A.V. Club's Jason Heller noted, "It's long been out of print, and there’s a good reason for it. It’s not terrible, but it doesn't represent what the band would become."
