The 2007 Motor City Bowl, part of the 2007-08 NCAA football bowl games season, occurred on December 26, 2007 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
The Central Michigan Chippewas, who won their second straight Mid-American Conference championship on the same field on December 1, returned to take on the Purdue Boilermakers, whom bowl officials invited from the Big Ten Conference. The bowl was a rematch of a game played on September 15 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Boilermakers won that game, 45–22. CMU had defeated Middle Tennessee in the 2006 game.
Purdue dominated the first half of the game, scoring 3 touchdowns in the first quarter to Central's 2 field goals, and by halftime they had assured a 21-point lead over the Chippewas. Central came back in the third quarter, scoring 4 touchdowns to tie the game. The final score was 51–48, with Purdue kicker Chris Summers kicking a game-winning field goal as time expired. Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter threw for 543 pass yards, setting a Motor City Bowl record and placing him fourth on the list of all-time bowl game performances. His total broke the Purdue school record.
The 2008 Motor City Bowl was a National Collegiate Athletic Association bowl game in which the Florida Atlantic Owls defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas 24–21. It was played on December 26, 2008 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan and aired on ESPN. The underdog FAU team from the Sun Belt Conference was led by game Most Valuable Player Rusty Smith. CMU had finished in third place in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference.
The game was the 12th installment of the Motor City Bowl and was attended by 41,399 people, the fourth-lowest all time for the Motor City Bowl.
The 1998 Motor City Bowl matched the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Louisville Cardinals.
Marshall was the only Division I-A or I-AA school to record 100 victories in the 1990s, and they had been in both Divisions for the decade. After twenty years of dominating Division I-AA and winning two championships, they moved to I-A starting with the 1997 season, joining the Mid-American Conference. In their first season, they won the MAC title and played in the 1997 Motor City Bowl, which they lost. Marshall, led by Chad Pennington at quarterback, was looking for their first ever bowl victory, having lost their first two.
This was Louisville's first bowl game since the 1993 Liberty Bowl. John L. Smith took over a program that had gone 1-10 the previous year, leading Louisville to 3rd place in Conference USA.
The game went 12 minutes and 56 seconds before the first score, but when James Williams caught a touchdown pass from Chad Pennington, the scoring began. Marshall and Louisville were tied 21-21 at haltime after six consecutive touchdowns combined from both teams to end the half with the average drive covering 84 yards. But Marshall scored 24 straight points in the second half before Louisville responded with a Collins touchdown. But it was too little too late as Billy Malashevich (who had kicked 6 extra points and a field goal previously in this game) kicked a field goal with ten minutes remaining that sealed the game for the Herd as they celebrated their first bowl win in Herd history. Chad Pennington threw for 411 yards and for 4 touchdowns on 18 of 24 passes. Chris Redman went 35 for 54 for 336 yards and Leroy Collins had 94 yards on 14 carries for three touchdowns. Marshall only punted once, on its first possession of the game.
