Moose Jaw

Moose Jaw (Assiniboine: tácehubana) is a city in south-central Saskatchewan, Canada, on the Moose Jaw River. It is situated on the Trans-Canada Highway, 77 km (48 mi) west of Regina. Residents of Moose Jaw are known as Moose Javians. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Moose Jaw No. 161.

Moose Jaw is an industrial centre and important railway junction for the area's agricultural produce. It is known for its giant historical murals on the exterior walls of buildings in its business district . CFB Moose Jaw is a NATO flight training school, and is home to the Snowbirds, Canada's military aerobatic air show flight demonstration team. Moose Jaw also has a casino and geothermal spa.

History

Cree and Assiniboine people used the Moose Jaw area as a winter encampment. The Missouri Coteau sheltered the valley and gave it warm breezes. The narrow river crossing and abundance of water and game made it a good location for settlement. Traditional native fur traders and Métis buffalo hunters created the first permanent settlement at a place called "the turn", at present-day Kingways Park.

Moose Jaw was a territorial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories, Canada.

The riding was created by royal proclamation in 1883 and abolished in 1905 when Alberta and Saskatchewan were created.

Moose Jaw was a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1908 to 1953 and from 1968 to 1988.

This riding was created in 1907 from parts of Assiniboia West and Calgary ridings. It was abolished in 1952 when it was redistributed into Assiniboia, Moose Jaw—Lake Centre and Rosetown—Biggar ridings.

It was re-created in 1966 from parts of Assiniboia, Moose Jaw—Lake Centre, Rosetown—Biggar, Rosthern, Saskatoon, and Swift Current ridings. The electoral district was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Moose Jaw—Lake Centre and Regina—Lumsden ridings.

Moose Jaw Transit provides local bus service to urban areas of the city of Moose Jaw, in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, about 65 kilometres (40 mi) west of the provincial capital Regina. This small system operates four routes from a downtown hub on weekdays between 7:15am and 9:45pm and on Saturdays from 7:15am to 6:15pm, with no Sunday or holiday service.
