Montuno has several meanings pertaining to Cuban music and its derivatives. Literally, montuno means 'comes from the mountain', and so Son montuno may refer to the older type of son played in the mountainous rural areas of Oriente. Another possibility is that the word "Montuno" comes from the word "Montura" which is the Spanish word for "Saddle", because the rhythm in Son music is like riding a horse. Or it may mean the final section of a song-based composition; in this sense it is simply part of a piece of music. Here it is usually a faster, brasher, semi-improvised instrumental section, sometimes with a repetitive vocal refrain. Finally, the term montuno is also used for a piano guajeo, the ostinato figure accompanying the montuno section, when it describes a repeated syncopated piano vamp, often with chromatic root movement.
Montù (or Montuni) is an Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Emilia region of central Italy. While ampelographers believe that the grape is indigenous to the plains of the Po river, its numbers have been steadily declining with 1200 hectares (3000 acres) reported in 1990.
There is some confusion about the color of the grapes with the Vitis International Variety Catalogue describing Montù as a blanc grape, while wine expert Jancis Robinson and writers Joe Bastianich and David Lynch describe the grape as a red wine variety. According to Italian wine laws, Montù is a permitted variety in the white Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine of Montuni del Reno.
Along the banks of the Reno river in Emilia-Romagna, Montù is the primary variety in the white DOC wine of Montuni del Reno. Here the grape must make up at least 85% of the blend with other non-aromatic local white grape varieties permitted to make up the remainder. The wine can be made in both a still and semi-sparkling frizzante style. Grapes destined for DOC production must be harvested with to yield no greater than 18 tonnes/hectares with the finished wine needing to attaining a minimum alcohol level of 10.5%.
"Montuno" (Montuno) was the fourth single released by Gloria Estefan from her first Spanish album Mi Tierra. The song saw a UK release only as "Mi Buen Amor" and Si Señor... were released simultaneously as the album's fourth single in Latin America and Europe respectively.
This single was released in December 1993, in the UK as a Limited Edition CD-Maxi and 7" Vinyl, a 2 track CD Single was released in some European countries. This single contained a special remix of Estefan's classic hit "Dr. Beat", the Hustlers Up-Town Full Length Disco Remix.
