Monsta X

Monsta X (Hangul: 몬스타엑스) is a South Korean hip hop boy group formed by Starship Entertainment in 2015. The members were chosen through a survival television show entitled No.Mercy (노머시). The group consists of seven members: Shownu, Wonho, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Jooheon, and I.M. The group's name Monsta X is derived from the word 'mon' which means 'my' in French and 'sta' which is shortened for 'star'. Therefore 'Monsta' means 'my star'. Meanwhile, the 'X' represents the unknown.

History

Pre-debut: No.Mercy

In November 2014, Mnet, in collaboration with Starship, announced that they would be launching a new survival program titled No.Mercy, to help create a Starship's new idol boy group. The 10-episode reality program began airing on December 10, and showed trainees at Starship going through a mission every week given by their mentors (including K.Will, Mad Clown, and Sistar) to perform either as group or individual. The show began with a total of 12 trainees, who were ranked from 1-12 according to the results of their performance and the judge's evaluation. After each performance, the trainees are ranked again and eliminated weekly. The final episode aired on February 11, and the final group lineup consisted of seven members including I.M. the new trainee that joined the survival program midway through the show.

"Monsta!!" is the fifth single by Orange County pop punk band Supernova, released on 5" by Sympathy for the Record Industry in 1995.

Monsta (EP)

Monsta is the debut extended play (EP) by the British band I See MONSTAS (credited as MONSTA on the release). It was released on 23 October 2012 through OWSLA. The EP spawned a single, "Messiah", which entered the UK Singles Chart at number 154. "Holdin' On" climbed the UK Singles Chart to number 48, due to strong sales of the Skrillex and Nero remix. It also peaked at number ten on UK Dance Chart and number three the UK Indie Chart.

Critical response

Vibe noted that "Messiah" was "brimming [with] raw energy while a grinding bass rhythm chugs along in the background with an overlay of powerfully deep vocals".Mixmag commented that the Skrillex and Nero remix "should boost the production outfit further into the EDM stratosphere". Renowned dance music blog Dancing Astronaut praised the release, commenting that "listeners can hear the power behind Skaar’s silky androgynous voice" and "adding the sounds of Skaar’s gritty soulful voice prove dubstep does not have to be the cliche “bass in your face” genre it has become".
