Monocle
A monocle is a type of corrective lens used to correct or enhance the vision in only one eye. It consists of a circular lens, generally with a wire ring around the circumference that can be attached to a string or wire. The other end of the string is then connected to the wearer's clothing to avoid losing the monocle. The antiquarian Philipp von Stosch wore a monocle in Rome in the 1720s, in order to closely examine engravings and antique engraved gems, but the monocle did not become an article of gentlemen's apparel until the nineteenth century. It was introduced by the dandy's quizzing glass of the 1790s, as a sense of high fashion.

Monocle (media company)
Monocle is a global affairs and lifestyle magazine, 24-hour radio station, website, and media brand, all produced by Winkontent Ltd. It was founded by Tyler Brûlé, a Canadian entrepreneur, Financial Times columnist, and previously founder of Wallpaper* magazine. Described by CBC News reporter Harry Forestell as a "meeting between Foreign Policy and Vanity Fair", the magazine aims to provide a global perspective on international affairs, business, culture, design, and fashion. The magazine is edited by Andrew Tuck.
The magazine launched on 15 February 2007, priced at 12 euros, 6 GBP, 12 USD with articles on subjects including the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, Chinese investment in Africa, and the best Portuguese-language Sunday newspapers. Subscriptions cost £90 annually (10 issues, plus two newspapers). In New Zealand, single issues sell for $18 each, in Japan for ¥2,310, in Switzerland for 20CHF, and in Spain for €11. In September 2014, Brûlé sold a minority stake in Monocle magazine to Japanese newspaper publisher Nikkei Inc. The deal valued Monocle at about $115m although the size of Nikkei's investment was undisclosed. In December 2014, Monocle launched a new annual publication called The Forecast. The magazine, which is intended to fill the gap between the Dec/Jan and February issues of Monocle, offers Monocle's key insights for the year ahead.
Monocle (comics)
Monocle is a DC Comics supervillain and a recurring foe to Hawkman. He first appeared in Flash Comics #64 (April-May 1945): "The Man with the Magic Monocles".
Fictional character biography
Jonathan Cheval is an honest businessman in the field of optics; however due to the scheming of a criminal he loses his business. Determined to get revenge on the people that cheated him, Cheval invents a number of monocles that can emit beams of energy. He is eventually captured by the Golden Age Hawkman after killing two of the criminals, although the remaining one is jailed with him.
Decades later, after being released from prison, he is invited by the Ultra-Humanite to join his Secret Society of Super Villains which battles Hawkman along with the rest of the Justice Society of America and the Justice League of America. He along with his colleagues are defeated and banished into an interdimensional limbo until the Ultra from 1942 contacts his future counterpart, enlisting the aid of all criminals then present in limbo. Monocle briefly resides once more in 1942 until he and his allies are defeated once again, this time at the hands of the All-Star Squadron.
