The beak is part of the shell of a bivalve mollusk, i.e. part of the shell of a saltwater or freshwater clam. The beak is the basal projection of the oldest part of the valve of the adult animal. The beak usually, but not always, coincides with the umbo, the highest and most prominent point on the valve. Because by definition, all bivalves have two valves, the shell of a bivalve has two umbones, and two beaks.
In many species of bivalves the beaks point towards one another. However, in some species of bivalves the beaks point posteriorly, in which case they are referred to as opisthogyrate; in others the beaks point forward, and are described as being prosogyrate.
If the beak is not eroded or worn down at all, it may still be capped with the prodissoconch, which is the larval shell of the animal.
Beak (stylized BEAK> and also named Recordings 05/01/09 > 17/01/09) is the self-titled debut studio album by British band Beak>, released by the label Invada in October 2009. It was improvised and recorded in a twelve day period without any overdubbing or repair. It earned generally positive reviews from critics upon release, holding an aggregate of 72 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Beak was written and recorded between 5–17 January 2009, improvised live without any overdubbing, at State Of Art Studios in Bristol, England. The reason for the improvised recording was that, according to member Geoff Barrow, "We’ve all played on really overdub-y records, but we felt like this wasn’t about that. We had enough of a sound between the three of us that we didn’t need to mess around with it." However, in an L.A. Record interview with the entire group, they said there was might've been one tiny overdub, and that was done through discussion.
The recording on each day would start at twelve PM, and last until six. Some songs were played ten times, while some others had two or three versions made, but usually the first take was chosen to be featured on the final product. The only tracks that were done in one take were "Backwell" and "Battery Point". Barrow said about the lyric writing, "I never wrote anything down. And what you hear is what happened in the [recording] room. Non-traditional vocals, really. I’m not a very lyrical person, and I’m definitely not a singer. I felt a little weird about it." The album was engineered by Stuart Matthews, and finally mastered by Shawn Joseph at Optimum Mastering.
Barnell Bohusk, currently known as Blackwing, formerly known as Beak, is a fictional character, a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is usually depicted as being associated with the X-Men and its spinoff the Exiles. Beak first appeared in New X-Men #117 and was created by Grant Morrison and Ethan Van Sciver.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Beak started developing his powers at puberty. His body changed into that of a humanoid-bird form, with a beaked face, bulbous eyes, wing-like arms that give him the ability to fly (albeit clumsily), talons on his hands and feet, and double-jointed knees. He also possesses heightened agility, and he may possess heightened senses and a lighter skeletal structure like the avian X-Man formerly known as the Angel. Feeling disgusted and ashamed because of his appearance, Beak ran away from home and went into hiding. He tells Beast that his nickname originated from other teenagers in Rotterdam, who would find him hiding behind beer barrels.
Mono may refer to:
Mono was a British electronic music duo which had a hit in the late 1990s with their song "Life in Mono". The group's music is often described as trip hop, based on its similarities to contemporary electronic music acts including Sneaker Pimps and Portishead. Audible, and frequently cited, influences in Mono's songs include jazzy instrumentation reminiscent of 1960s spy film soundtracks and production styles rooted in 1960s pop music.
The band, formed in late 1996 in London, consisted of singer Siobhan de Maré and Martin Virgo on keyboards, synthesizer programming, and production. Virgo, trained in classical piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, had been working as a session musician since the early 1990s as part of the production team of Nellee Hooper, which led to credits on a remix of Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" (considered one of the landmark songs of trip hop's "Bristol sound") and Björk's 1993 album Debut. De Maré comes from a family with several generations of history in entertainment; her father was Tony Meehan, drummer for the Shadows, her grandfather was one of the Gongmen featured in the opening logo sequences in Rank Organisation films, and her grandmother was a dancer who worked with Shirley Bassey. She had been working as a session singer for hip hop and R&B musicians, as well as writing and touring, though much of this material consisted of underground and white label releases.
Mono was the first album from The Icarus Line. It was originally released May 8, 2001 in the U.S. by Crank! Records on CD, and Buddyhead on LP.
The album was recorded throughout two separate sessions in 2000. The first of these were conducted at the studio "Rotund Rascal" on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood. This initial attempt at recording the entire album with Mark Trombino as engineer, ultimately resulted in only the completion of drums, bass, Alvin's guitars, and about half of Aaron's guitar tracks. In a bold move, the band fired Trombino, and resumed work over a month later with Alex Newport at Messenger's Studio in North Hollywood, also on Lankershim Blvd. Having recorded albums such as At The Drive-In's before at this same studio, Newport was comfortable in moving very quickly there with the band. The album, being recorded onto tape, as opposed to Pro Tools (as was customary for most bands of the time) resulted in the majority of the album being "first takes". The album was also mixed quickly by the band with Newport at Messenger's Studio. It was then mastered by Mark Chalecki in the Capitol Records building.
Lipstick on a thermos cup,
Lust and whiskey fill it up
And smoke blows from the chimney to the moon.
It's much too cold in the Midwest -
Chilly hands cup chilly breasts.
Things not said fill up every room.
As he stands there in the door,
There's no room for him anymore.
She lies there saying,
"Honey take one last look."
I'll tell it all in my new book.
Above the city 300 feet,
A derelict in a penthouse suite
Packs his suitcase for the midnight train.
The rich girl could not face her dream.
He's bitter coffee, she's sweet cream.
She pulls on her shirt, outside it rains.
And later in the rambling dark,
He'll unwrap her broken heart
And smile the weary smile of the crook.
I'll tell it all in my new book.
Coyote sleeps with everyone,
But in the morning he's long gone
And it turns out that he was a she.
Tales grow tall around the fire.
Where there's no truth, no one's a liar.
Whatever mask you wear is who you'll be.
There is a hole in the day
Through which we make our gateway -
I make mine every time I'm shook.
I'll tell it all in my new book.
We sift through culture run amok
But our rhythm is still boom-boom-chuck.
The whole world to us is now a theme park.
The tourist takes the traveler's place,
Buys a new body, a new face.
A hymn is not a hymn sung with no heart.
And I turn to the Man of Woe
And ask him where there's left to go -
He points down with his shepherd's crook.
I'll tell it all in my new book.
When they lead you to the wood,
Remember that you always should
Leave a trail of black-eyed peas behind
So I can find my way to you,
Whatever you may get into -
You are the one I always long to find,
And when this crazy time is gone,
We'll build a home down by a pond.
I'd make you a good mate - I love to cook.
I'll tell it all in my new book.
On old Cape Cod, it blows a gale.
I'll be Jonah. You be the whale.
I want to dive as deep as we can go.
Your ship is sailing for the dark,
Leave your suitcase, take my heart -
Hold me, stow me, love me very slow.
Why must this hour come to pass?
I look at you and raise my glass.
Our kisses cannot stop the scythe, the hook.
I'll tell it all in my new book.
I heard a young man sing a song,
Just that one, and he was gone
Off on the journey we all used to make.
It was a song like rain and wind,
Reminded me of where I'd been,
And that wild feeling I can't seem to shake.
I'd like to go into some shack
And wait for that kid to come back
And sing until the walls and windows shook
And tell it all in my new book.
The soldiers meet between the fights
To drink and gamble half the night
While waiting for the fresh troops to arrive.
The battlements will always stand,
According to the ancient plan,
Not a one of us gets out alive.
And as we huddled in the smoke,
I began to get the joke.
I laughed and kissed you
While the whole world shook.
