The Mizoram Police Force is the law enforcing agency of the state of Mizoram, India.

Administration

The administrative control of Mizoram Police vests with the Home Minister of Mizoram who holds the portfolio of Home Minister. The supervision and coordination of Police is done by the Home Department, Govt. of Mizoram. The force is headed by Mr. Thianghlima Pachuau, IPS who is currently the acting Director General of Police. For administrative purposes, Mizoram is divided into Eight Districts, Each District is headed by one Superintendent of Police.

Mizoram

Mizoram (English pronunciation: ⁱ/mɪˈzɔərəm/) is one of the states of Northeast India, with Aizawl as its capital. The name is derived from Mi (people), Zo (Belonging to the people of Mizoram/Lushai Hills) and Ram (land), and thus Mizoram implies "land of the hill people". In the northeast, it is the southern most landlocked state sharing borders with three of the seven sister states, namely Tripura, Assam, Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometer border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Like several other northeastern states of India, Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory. It became the 23rd state of India, a step above Union Territory, on 20 February 1987.

Mizoram's population was 1,091,014, according to a 2011 census. It is the 2nd least populous state in the country. Mizoram covers an area of approximately 21,087 square kilometers. About 91% of the state is forested.

About 95% of current Mizoram population is of diverse tribal origins who settled in the state, mostly from southeast Asia, over waves of migration starting about 16th century but mainly in 18th century. This is the highest concentration of tribal people among all states of India, and they are currently protected under Indian constitution as Scheduled Tribe. The tribes converted from Animist religions to Christianity over the first half of 20th century. Mizoram is one of three states of India with a Christian majority (87%). Its people belong to various denominations, mostly Presbyterian in its north and Baptists in south.

Mizoram (Lok Sabha constituency)

Coordinates: 23°22′N 92°00′E / 23.36°N 92.00°E / 23.36; 92.00 Mizoram is the only Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) constituency in the Northeast Indian state of Mizoram, and covers the entire area of the state. The seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Its first member of parliament (MP) was Sangliana of the Mizo Union who represented this constituency in the Fifth Lok Sabha when it became a union territory on 21 January 1972. In the 1977 election, independent politician, R. Rothuama, was elected and went on to be re-elected in 1980. Shri Lalduhoma of the Indian National Congress (INC) was elected in 1984. Mizoram became a state of India on 20 February 1987. In the next election in 1989, C. Silvera also of the INC was elected. He went on to win the seat in the next two elections, serving from 1989–98 as its MP. Independent candidate H. Lallungmuana was elected in 1998 by a victory margin of only 41 votes. From 1999 to 2009, this constituency was represented for two terms by politician, Vanlalzawma, firstly as an independent candidate and then as a member of the Mizo National Front. As of the 2014 elections, this constituency's MP is C. L. Ruala of the INC who has represented this seat since 2009. The most successful party in this constituency is the INC who have won 6 times out of the 12 elections held.
