Mitre 10

Mitre 10 is the trading name of an Australian retail and trade hardware store chain. Operations are based on a co-operative system where the store owners are members of the national group and each has voting rights. The chain name references the mitre joint, but was inspired by the Mitre Tavern in Melbourne. There are over 400 "Mitre 10" and its associated "True Value Hardware" franchises throughout Australia.

History

The move to set up a co-operative group of hardware stores originated from a meeting held in Victoria, in June 1959, with five men who would become Mitre 10's founding fathers — Tom Molomby, Tom Danaher, Reg Buchanan, Jack Womersley and Ian Nisbet. The meeting took place in the Mitre Tavern, and the group eventually hoped to build things up to ten stores, so they decided to call the company "Mitre 10". This move occurred specifically to maximise funds and energy with regards to advertising and promotions and to demonstrate that independent operators offered service, advice and competitive prices.

Mitre 10 (New Zealand)

Mitre 10 is a major New Zealand chain of home improvement stores established in June 1974.It employees more than 3000 staff and functions as a co-operative, with over 80 stores run by 60 local owner-operators.

It is an entirely separate company from the Australian Mitre 10 chain.

Marketing and advertising have been memorable and many New Zealanders can still sing slogans from 10 and 20 years past - from "Mitre 10, Mitre 10, We’re New Zealand’s biggest hardware men" in the 70s through the "Good on Ya Mitre 10 You’ve done it again" campaigns in the 80s, to "You’ll come out better off at Mitre 10" and the Mega Strongman’s "Big is Good" until recently.

The brand is involved in many community projects, such as the Mitre 10 Takahē Rescue project, the New Zealander of the Year – Community of the year Award and the Neurological Foundation’s Annual Appeal, as well as individual projects supported by stores to help their local communities - and has done very well in the Readers Digest Trusted Brand survey

Mitre

The mitre (/ˈmaɪtər/; Greek: μίτρα, "headband" or "turban"), also spelled miter (see spelling differences), is a type of headgear now known as the traditional, ceremonial head-dress of bishops and certain abbots in traditional Christianity; continuing the priestly practice of Temple Judaism. Mitres are worn in the Orthodox Church, Roman Catholic Church, as well as in the Anglican Communion, some Lutheran churches, and also bishops and certain other clergy in the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Oriental Orthodox Churches. The Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church also wears a mitre during important ceremonies such as the Episcopal Consecration.

Origin

Etymology

The word μίτρα, mítra, (or, in its Ionic form, μίτρη, mítrē) first appears in Greek and signifies either of several garments: a kind of waist girdle worn under a cuirass, as mentioned in Homer's Iliad; a headband used by women for their hair; a sort of formal Babylonian head dress, as mentioned by Herodotus (Histories 1.195 and 7.90). The former two meanings have been etymologically connected with the word μίτος, mítos, "thread", but the connection is tenuous at best.

The Plantagenets (1154–1485)

King Henry II ascended the throne in 1154 as the first of the Plantagenet dynasty. For the first few years of his reign the coins of King Stephen continued to be produced, but in order to restore public confidence in the currency a new standard was introduced, known as the Tealby penny after a hoard of such coins which was found at Tealby, Lincolnshire in 1807. A total of 30 mints were employed in the initial recoinage (the mint at Ipswich was not active during the early stages - but was extremely productive from class 'B' until the end of the series). The mints in operation at the beginning of the recoinage were— Bedford, Bristol, Bury St Edmunds, Canterbury, Carlisle, Chester, Colchester, Durham, Exeter, Gloucester, Hereford, Ilchester, Launceston, Leicester, Lincoln, London, Newcastle, Northampton, Norwich, Oxford, Pembroke, Salisbury, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Thetford, Wallingford, Wilton, Winchester, and York — but once the recoinage was completed only 12 mints were allowed to remain active. This marks the beginning of the gradual decline in the number of mints used to strike English coins.
