Distrust

Distrust is a formal way of not trusting any one party too much in a situation of grave risk or deep doubt. It is commonly expressed in civics as a division or balance of powers, or in politics as means of validating treaty terms. Systems based on distrust simply divide the responsibility so that checks and balances can operate. The phrase "Trust, but verify" refers specifically to distrust.

An electoral system or adversarial process inevitably is based on distrust, but not on mistrust. Parties compete in the system, but they do not compete to subvert the system itself, or gain bad faith advantage through it - if they do they are easily caught by the others. Of course much mistrust does exist between parties, and it is exactly this which motivates putting in place a formal system of distrust. Diplomatic protocol for instance, which applies between states, relies on such means as formal disapproval which in effect say "we do not trust that person". It also tends to rely on a strict etiquette - distrusting each person's habits to signal their intent, and instead relying on a global standard for behaviour in sensitive social settings.

Mistrust (band)

Mistrust was a heavy metal band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984. This band primarily consisted of vocalist Jeff L'Heureux, guitarists Owen Wright and Michael Winston, bassist Tim Wolfe, and drummer Chris Gohde. They recorded one album in their brief existence called Spin the World, which was originally released through C.O.M.A. Records in 1986 and again through Heart of Steel Records in 2009.

History

Background and formation (1981-1984)

Before joining Mistrust, vocalist Jeff L’Heureux was involved in a band called Culprit, which was first formed in 1981. They recorded one studio album in 1983 called Guilty as Charged. Meanwhile, guitarist Michael Winston and bassist Tim Wolfe played in a band called Rottweiler, appearing alongside various other artists on a compilation album in 1984 called Northwest Metalfest; this album also features the band Sato whose bass player was future Alice in Chains member Mike Starr. Winston and Wolfe left Rottweiler shortly afterwards to join guitarist Owen Wright, drummer Chris Gohde, and vocalist Kevin Wells in what was then the first incarnation of Mistrust. When asked why they chose Mistrust as their band name, Gohde replied, " I forget who came up with the name, but I think Owen did. We thought there was a lot of "mistrust" in the world so kind[a] just went with it. And it sounded cool!" Things began to fall apart with Wells prompting the rest of the band to search for a different vocalist as they continued to hone their craft. In June of 1985 the band recorded a 4 song demo with Steel Sea / The Heat vocalist Howard Dee Gray who is the Brother of producer guitar player Kelly Gray (Queensryche and the Geoff Tate Band), the band played one live show with Dee on vocals. Gray left the band in late August of the same year, for unspecified reasons. Eventually, Jeff L'Heureux agreed to help out and sing on their demo but initially declined to join the band as he was still with Culprit at the time.
