Mist, Oregon

Mist is an unincorporated community in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. Formerly called Riverside, the place was renamed in 1888 for the atmospheric conditions of the Nehalem Valley. The first land claims in the area had been made circa 1870. The original Riverside post office was closed in 1975.

On July 6, 2001, the Mist store, which was built in 1874, caught fire and was destroyed. Until then, it was the oldest continuously operating business in Oregon, offering food and hardware and displaying historic newspaper clippings and antique logging equipment on the walls.

Mist is a crossroads community where Oregon Route 47 turns north to Clatskanie, and a pioneer trail (Burn Road) crossed the Nehalem River and went south to Vernonia. It is the eastern terminus of Oregon Route 202. The Nehalem River valley widens between Mist and Jewell and was favored by the Native American tribes of the area for hunting; it was later favored by early European American settlers for agriculture. Although the area is now sparsely settled, it is notable for having the largest operating sawmill in Columbia County and also geological conditions lending themselves to natural gas storage. Mist contains one of the very few, and therefore very valuable, natural gas storage areas in the Pacific Northwest. It operates unobtrusively on a hill near Mist. It is controlled by NW Natural (formerly Northwest Natural Gas) and is connected by several pipelines, including a 16-inch (410 mm) and a 24-inch (610 mm) pipeline along the Nehalem Highway.

Andrew McIntosh (professor)

Andrew McIntosh is professor of thermodynamics and combustion theory at the University of Leeds. His group has received recognition for research on the physics behind the gaseous "cannon" of the bombardier beetle and his biomimetic application of this to the design of spray mechanisms, which has resulted in several patents. McIntosh is a young earth creationist.

Research

McIntosh's research group has developed a new technology known as µMist which is based on the gaseous "cannon" of the bombardier beetle. In December 2010, this work received the outstanding contribution to innovation and technology title at the Times Higher Education awards in London.

Views

In a discussion with Richard Dawkins on BBC Radio Ulster and in an article, McIntosh argued that the principles of thermodynamics are not consistent with Darwinian evolution.

McIntosh is director of the organisation Truth in Science which promotes creationism and intelligent design. In November 2006, the University of Leeds issued a statement distancing itself from creationism, and noted that McIntosh's directorship of Truth in Science is unconnected with his teaching or research.

Pilot (House)

"Pilot", also known as "Everybody Lies", is the first episode of the U.S. television series House. The episode premiered on the Fox network on November 16, 2004. It introduces the character of Dr. Gregory House (played by Hugh Laurie)—a maverick antisocial doctor—and his team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. The episode features House's attempts to diagnose a kindergarten teacher after she collapses in class.

House was created by David Shore, who got the idea for the curmudgeonly title character from a doctor's visit. Initially, producer Bryan Singer wanted an American to play House, but British actor Hugh Laurie's audition convinced him that a foreign actor could play the role. Shore wrote House as a character with parallels to Sherlock Holmes—both are drug users, aloof, and largely friendless. The show's producers wanted House handicapped in some way and gave the character a damaged leg arising from an improper diagnosis.

House (1995 film)

House is a Canadian drama film, released in 1995. Written and directed by Laurie Lynd as an adaptation of Daniel MacIvor's one-man play House, the film stars MacIvor as Victor, an antisocial drifter with some hints of paranoid schizophrenia, who arrives in the town of Hope Springs and invites ten strangers into the local church to watch him perform a monologue about his struggles and disappointments in life.

The original play was performed solely by MacIvor. For the film, Lynd added several other actors, giving the audience members some moments of direct interaction and intercutting Victor's monologue with scenes which directly depict the stories he describes. The extended cast includes Anne Anglin, Ben Cardinal, Patricia Collins, Jerry Franken, Caroline Gillis, Kathryn Greenwood, Nicky Guadagni, Joan Heney, Rachel Luttrell, Stephen Ouimette, Simon Richards, Christofer Williamson and Jonathan Wilson.

The film premiered at the 1995 Toronto International Film Festival in the Perspectives Canada series, before going into general release in 1996.

House (game)

House, also referred to as "playing house" or "play grown up", is a traditional game, a form of make believe where children or adults take on the roles of a nuclear family, which typically consists of a father, mother, a child/children, a baby, and a cat/dog.

This game is most commonly played with children ages 3–5, and often with props (most schools have a "kitchen area" with plastic food). The nature of the game usually attracts girls, but boys will sometimes play as well, usually with some reluctance. In one episode of Pee-wee's Playhouse, Pee-wee, Miss Yvonne, and several playhouse denizens play this game.

Every person assumes a role, and then they invent household scenarios in which everyone takes a part: getting food, doing chores, fixing things, going places, "making babies" (with varying degrees of realism), caring for the younger children, feeding the pets, welcoming the husband home from work, etc.

Granny Dunne's house was where the game originated. The apple garden and the turf shed was where most of the first games were played. 'The cat did a push' is a feature length movie set for release in 2017. The film will be based on these first games of house and has been tipped to break Irish box office records.
