John Davies (archivist)

John Davies, A.M.N.P.P.N. (July 27, 1925 – October 21, 1999) was an archivist, writer, and recipient of the prestigious Ahli Mangku Negara award. He served as Executive Officer of the National Archives of Malaysia (Arkib Negara Malaysia), Petaling Jaya between the 1961 and 1977. He was the world's leading authority on the conservation and preservation of documents during his era.

History

Davies was born in Parit Buntar, Perak, Malaysia to Joseph Sanghuni Nair and Marial Joseph, he was baptised as John Davies, and was of Indian Malayali Nair descent. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya in WWII Davies served as a rations officer. He later met Lord Mervyn Cecil Ffranck Sheppard (Tan Sri Mubin Sheppard), who had seen potential in Davies and offered him a junior position at the National Archives of Malaysia. Davies excelled in his profession, rose up the ranks and was promoted to Archives Executive Officer. Davies published several books and traveled overseas to England, where he studied and refined his art. Later on in his career Mr Davies was awarded the Ahli Mangku Negara award from the Raja of Selangor for his service at the Malaysian Archives. Being the leading figure on the subject of preservation, he was required to lecture on many occasions throughout Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa.

The Very Rev John Harverd Davies has been Dean of Derby since 2010.

He was born in Bolton on 29 November 1957; educated at Brentwood School, Keble College, Oxford and Westcott House, Cambridge; and ordained in 1985. After curacies at Our Lady and St Nicholas with St Anne, Liverpool and St John the Baptist, Peterborough he was Vicar of St Margaret, Anfield then Chaplain, Fellow and Lecturer at his old college. He was Vicar of St Michael with St Mary's Church, Melbourne from 1999 until his appointment as Dean.

In 2012 Dr Davies undertook a sponsored abseil from the tower of Derby Cathedral in order to raise funds, both for the Cathedral and for the Padley Centre, a local charity providing help and support to the homeless and other socially disadvantaged people.

John Davies (cricketer, born 1932)

John Trevor Davies (born 26 December 1932) is a former English cricketer. Davies was a right-handed batsman. He was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Davies made his first-class debut for Cambridge University against Surrey in 1957. He made 7 further first-class appearances for the University, the last coming against Middlesex in 1958. In his 8 first-class matches, he took 94 runs at an average of 6.26, with a highest score of 29. His highest score came against Worcestershire in 1957. His score was 6 more than his next highest, 23 scored against the touring West Indians in 1957. As a fielder, Davies took 4 catches.

He also played Minor Counties Championship cricket for Shropshire from 1957 to 1958, and for Dorset from 1959 to 1964, making a combined total of 50 appearances in Minor counties cricket.
