Miss World 1974, the 24th Miss World pageant, was held on November 22, 1974 in the Royal Albert Hall, London, England.

Helen Elizabeth Morgan of the United Kingdom was crowned the winner at the end of the event, becoming the second Welsh and fourth woman from the United Kingdom to win the title. She resigned four days later on discovery that she had a child. Morgan was the first Miss World titleholder to officially resign, and the third not to finish her reign as Miss World, after Marjorie Wallace in 1973 and Lúcia Petterle in 1971.[citation needed]

Morgan had represented Wales in the 1974 Miss Universe pageant earlier that year and placed first runner-up to eventual winner Amparo Muñoz of Spain. When Muñoz relinquished her Miss Universe title later that year, Morgan had already been outed as a mother and, therefore, ineligible to succeed Muñoz as Miss Universe. Muñoz was not replaced by any of the other runner-ups.

Anneline Kriel of South Africa was crowned the new Miss World after Morgan's resignation.

Miss World

The Miss World pageant is the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since his death in 2000, Morley's widow, Julia Morley, has co-chaired the pageant. Alongside with its rival, the Miss Universe and Miss Earth contests, Miss World pageant is one of the three most publicised beauty contests in the world.

The current Miss World is Mireia Lalaguna of Spain who was crowned on 19 December 2015 in Sanya, China PR.

20th century

In 1951, Eric Morley organised a bikini contest as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations which he called the Festival Bikini Contest. The event was popular with the press, and was dubbed "Miss World" by the media. The swimsuit competition was intended as a promotion for the bikini which had only recently been introduced onto the market, and which was still widely regarded as immodest. When the 1951 Miss World pageant winner, Kerstin "Kiki" Hakansson from Sweden, was crowned in a bikini, it added to the controversy.

Miss World 2013

Miss World 2013, the 63rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 28 September 2013 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia. 127 contestants from all over the world competed, making the biggest turnout in the pageant's history. Yu Wenxia of China PR crowned Megan Young of the Philippines as her successor at the end of the event. This is the first time the Philippines and a Southeast Asian country won the title of Miss World.

  • Miss World (song)

"Miss World" is a song by American alternative rock band Hole, written by frontwoman Courtney Love and lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. The song was released as the band's fifth single and the first from their second studio album, Live Through This, in March 1994.

The single was released in the United States on Tim/Kerr records, an independent label in Portland, Oregon, on a 7" Pink vinyl, as well as a limited edition picture disc pressing paired with the band's cover of "Over the Edge" by the Wipers. City Slang released CD and vinyl versions of the single in Europe, both with "Rock Star" (Alternate Mix) as a B-side. A music video for the song was directed by Sophie Muller in March 1994 and released in promotion with the single.

    Origin and recording

Erlandson and Love wrote "Miss World" in summer 1992 after the departure of former band members Jill Emery and Caroline Rue. An early version of the song, recorded with drummer Patty Schemel and Love's husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was recorded in BMG Ariola Ltda in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on January 21, 1993. Featuring Love on lead guitar and vocals, recently recruited drummer Patty Schemel and Cobain on bass, the trio recorded the song, alongside others such as "She Walks On Me", "Softer, Softest" and "Closing Time", during breaks in Nirvana's session. Sound engineer Craig Montgomery stated that though some songs were "half-baked ideas", "'Miss World' was a fairly complete song at that point" and "'the most fleshed out song' of the session."

    This time
I know it's gonna be for real
    This time
I know it's gonna be for real
    Full stand still
I miss the chemistry of your kiss
    This time

    Full stand still
    Alone
    And it's for real
    Oh full stand still
    Alone
    And it's for real
I feel so totally happy, and it's all so real
I could surf the earth on a banana peel
    I'm so totally into this
    The chemistry of your kiss
The way you lose yourself at night
The way you look in the morning light
    You're so pretty
Makes me wanna burn this city down
I walk the streets with a frown
The size of a playground merry-go-round
    This time (this time)
I know it's gonna be for real
    You are Miss World
    I miss
    The chemistry of your kiss
    Full stand still
    Alone
    And it's for real
    Ah full stand still
    This time
I know it's gonna be for real
    Full stand still
    Alone
