The 2013 Milwaukee IndyFest was an IndyCar Series race held on June 15, 2013 at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin. The race was the ninth in the 2013 IndyCar Series season, and was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport.

Background

Andretti Autosport had the most victories heading into the Milwaukee race, with James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay winning two and one race, respectively. The defending race winner was Hunter-Reay.

Qualifying

Marco Andretti of Andretti Autosport clinched the pole position with a speed of 170.515 miles per hour (274.417 km/h). His teammate James Hinchcliffe started second, Will Power started third, Ryan Hunter-Reay and E. J. Viso started fourth and fifth, respectively. Sebastian Saavedra started a career-high seventh, with Tony Kanaan, Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud and Tristan Vautier rounded out the top ten.

Race

In the race, Takuma Sato dominated, leading a race-high 109 laps, until he drifted into turn 4 and nearly hit the wall; Sato then pitted under green, but Ana Beatriz's contact brought out the caution, bringing Sato down a lap, and he was eventually passed by Ryan Hunter-Reay on lap 198. Hunter-Reay led the remaining 53 laps and won by 4.809 seconds over Helio Castroneves to claim his second straight victory at the track, becoming the first back-to-back race winner at Milwaukee since Tony Kanaan in 2006-07. The win was Andretti Autosport's 47th in the IndyCar Series, and fifth at Milwaukee.Will Power finished third, behind by 5.39 seconds, for his first podium of the season, followed by E. J. Viso, his best finish of the year, and Hunter-Reay's teammate James Hinchcliffe closed out the top five. Pole-sitter Marco Andretti had his car stall when leaving the pits on lap 97 and stop on the backstretch with an electrical problem, and finished 20th.Scott Dixon, Sato, Dario Franchitti, Justin Wilson, and Kanaan finished the top ten.

ABC Supply Wisconsin 250

The ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers is an IndyCar Series race held at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin.

History

Open wheel racing at the track dates back to 1937. AAA sanctioned races in 1937–1939, 1941, and 1946–1955. The track was paved in 1954.

USAC sanctioned Championship car races from 1956–1979. In 1980, the race switched to a CART/Champ Car race, and continued through 2006. IndyCar started holding races at the track in 2004, and thus for a brief time from 2004-2006, the track hosted both a Champ Car race (June) and an IndyCar race (August).

Starting in 2007, IndyCar became the lone event. The race was put on hiatus for 2010, stemming from management difficulties regarding payment of sanctioning fees. In 2011, the race returned and continues to be held.

Race scheduling

For most years starting in 1949, Milwaukee traditionally hosted the first race following the Indianapolis 500. From 1947 to 1982, Milwaukee generally hosted two races, the first race right after Indy in June, and the second in August or September. The latter sometimes in the days surrounding the Wisconsin State Fair.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee (/mɪlˈwɔːkiː/) is the largest city in the State of Wisconsin and the fifth-largest city in the Midwestern United States. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County and is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. According to 2010 census data, the City of Milwaukee has a population of 594,833. Milwaukee is the main cultural and economic center of the Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Metropolitan Area with a population of 2,043,904 as of an official 2014 estimate.

The first Europeans to pass through the area were French Catholic missionaries and fur traders. In 1818, the French Canadian explorer Solomon Juneau settled in the area, and in 1846 Juneau's town combined with two neighboring towns to incorporate as the City of Milwaukee. Large numbers of German and other immigrants helped increase the city's population during the 1840s and the following decades.

Known for its brewing traditions, major new additions to the city include the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the Wisconsin Center, Miller Park, an expansion to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Pier Wisconsin, as well as major renovations to the UW–Milwaukee Panther Arena. In addition, many new skyscrapers, condos, lofts and apartments have been constructed in neighborhoods on and near the lakefront and riverbanks.

Milwaukee Intermodal Station

Milwaukee Intermodal Station is the main intercity bus and train station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, located downtown. The station is served by Amtrak's Empire Builder and Hiawatha Service as well as bus companies Coach USA - Wisconsin Coach Lines (regional and intercity services), Greyhound Lines, Jefferson Lines, Indian Trails, Lamers, Badger Bus and Megabus.

Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) local bus route 57 serves the station directly and several other local bus routes operate on nearby streets.

The city's other intercity stations include Milwaukee Airport Railroad Station near General Mitchell International Airport on the south side of the city and several other intercity bus stations. Intercity bus companies with a presence in Milwaukee besides those at serving the intermodal include Badger Bus and Tornado Bus.

History

The Milwaukee Union Station was dedicated on August 3, 1965 by the Milwaukee Road to replace their previous Everett Street Depot. The Chicago and North Western Railroad closed their Milwaukee station (Lake Front Depot) and moved their passenger operations to the new Milwaukee Road depot in 1966. The depot was built on West St. Paul Avenue in a modernistic style that proved unpopular quickly after it was erected.
