West Virginia

West Virginia ⁱ/ˌwɛst vərˈdʒɪnjə/ is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north (and, slightly, east), and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston.

West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).

West Virginia Route 101

West Virginia Route 101 is an unsigned 1-mile (1.6 km) long north–south state highway in the City of Huntington in Cabell County, West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 60 (31st Street). The northern terminus is at US 60 (Third Avenue).

From 31st Street, WV 101 follows Eighth Avenue west to 29th Street, where WV 101 turns north to follow 29th Street to Third Avenue.

History

WV 101 was part of US 60 until US 60 was moved two blocks to the east in 1990.

West Virginia Route 26

West Virginia Route 26 is a north–south state highway located within Preston County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 50 in Fellowsville. The northern terminus is at the Pennsylvania state line northeast of Glade Farms, where WV 26 continues as Pennsylvania Route 281.

Milton is a town in Cabell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,423 at the 2010 census.

Milton is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 288,649. It incorporated in 1876 by David Harshbarger a large land holder, and is named for Milton Reese, Milton's first postmaster, in the vicinity at the time the town was established.

Milton is located at 38°26′10″N 82°08′00″W / 38.435998°N 82.133197°W / 38.435998; -82.133197Coordinates: 38°26′10″N 82°08′00″W / 38.435998°N 82.133197°W / 38.435998; -82.133197 (38.435998, -82.133197), along the Mud River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.58 square miles (4.09 km²), of which, 1.54 square miles (3.99 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) is water.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,423 people, 1,132 households, and 666 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,573.4 inhabitants per square mile (607.5/km²). There were 1,243 housing units at an average density of 807.1 per square mile (311.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.6% White, 0.7% African American, 0.1% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

Milton H. West

Milton Horace West (June 30, 1888 – October 28, 1948) was a seven-term Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives representing Texas's 15th congressional district from 1933 until his death in 1948.

Early life

Milton Horace West was born on a farm near Gonzales, Texas on June 30, 1888. As a child he attended the local public schools in Gonzales County and later enrolled at West Texas Military Academy in San Antonio, Texas. After graduation West served with the Texas Rangers from 1911 to 1912. In 1915, after being admitted to the Texas state bar, he opened his first legal practice in Floresville, Texas.

Political career

From 1922 to 1925, West served as district attorney for Texas's 28th judicial district and later as assistant district attorney from 1927 to 1930. He won his first public office in 1930 when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives where he served as a Democrat from 1930 to 1933. In 1933 West became a U.S. Representative when he was elected to replace John N. Garner after his resignation. He was later reelected to seven of his own terms in congress. He was reelected unopposed in 1942, 1944, and 1946 and did not stand for reelection in 1948. He died in office on October 28, 1948. He was a longtime resident of Brownsville, Texas where his body was buried in Buena Vista Cemetery. Lloyd Bentsen won the special election to fill West's vacant seat.

West Virginia has 11 wineries located throughout the state, including three designated American Viticultural Areas. Because of the state's cold winter climate, most producers focus on French hybrid grape varieties. The most successful Vitis vinifera plantings are Riesling in the northeast portion of the state.
