Michael John "Mike" Sweeney (born July 22, 1973) is a former Major League Baseball first baseman. Sweeney played his first 13 seasons in the majors with the Kansas City Royals, first as a catcher and then at first base. Sweeney also played for the Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, and Philadelphia Phillies. On March 25, 2011, Sweeney retired from baseball. He now works as a special assistant for the Kansas City Royals. Sweeney was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame on August 15, 2015.
Sweeney was drafted by the Royals as a catcher out of Ontario High School (Ontario, California) in the 10th round (262nd overall) of the 1991 MLB Draft. He signed with the Royals on July 22, 1991; two days after his eighteenth birthday. Sweeney made his major league debut on September 14, 1995 as a catcher. He got his first major league base hit against Cleveland Indians' pitcher Paul Assenmacher at Jacobs Field in the final game of the season. While his ability with the bat impressed the Royals, they were less than enamored with his skills behind the plate.
Michael "Mike" Sweeney (born December 25, 1959) is a former Canadian soccer player. In 2012 as part of the Canadian Soccer Association's centennial celebration, he was named to the on the all-time Canada XI men's team.
In 1980, the Edmonton Drillers of the North American Soccer League signed Sweeney. He spent three seasons with the Drillers before moving to the Vancouver Whitecaps for the 1983 season. While he began the 1984 season with the Whitecaps, he was traded to the Golden Bay Earthquakes. The NASL folded at the end of the 1984 season. Sweeney, never discouraged, continued to display soccer skills far advanced compared to the rest of the league.
Sweeney was also a long-time Cleveland Force MISL player. He then moved to the Minnesota Strikers for the 1987-1988 season. He then moved to the Baltimore Blast. In 1989, the Cleveland Crunch selected Sweeney in the Expansion Draft. On June 30, 1989, he signed with the Crunch and remained with the team through at least the 1991-1992 season.

Michael Thomas Sweeney (born 15 September 1947, Salford, Lancashire, England) is a broadcaster and radio DJ.
Sweeney attended Mount Carmel School in Salford, after which he worked at Associated Electrical Industries in Trafford Park. He was a platelayer at the docks, a labourer, a miner, a van driver, building site labourer and a computer programmer. He performed in a local band, the Salford Jets, as a singer and songwriter in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band had one hit single that reached No. 72 in the UK Singles Charts in 1980.
By the age of 31 an onward he was regularly being interviewed on Manchester's Piccadilly radio station and had begun to make promotion jingles for his band's gigs for the station. He was then offered a 12-show trial as one of the station's disc jockeys; it was thought that his Salford accent would go down well with local audiences. He worked prime time slots on the station from 1981 into the late 1990s while branching out into interviewing, sports reportage and documentaries. He plays football, has boxed for Salford Lads' Club and also swum for the city. He also had his own Friday night show Sweeney's 60's Classics. He not only played the well known classics but more obscure singles that had never been heard since the 60's.
