Mike Saunders

Mike Saunders (born May 1952), better known as "Metal Mike" Saunders, is a rock critic and the singer of the Californian punk band Angry Samoans. He is credited with coining the music genre label "heavy metal" in a record review for Humble Pie's As Safe As Yesterday Is in the November 12, 1970 issue of Rolling Stone. (The original text is shown in the VH1 Classic documentary Heavy: The Story of Metal from 2007). Six months later in 1971, he used the phrase again while reviewing Sir Lord Baltimore's first album, Kingdom Come, in the pages of Creem magazine.

Biography

Saunders was born and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1973 with a degree in statistics; eventually he received another bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Saunders kept his day job as an accountant throughout his years as lead singer and guitarist for the Angry Samoans.

Saunders' political incorrectness and personal attacks in his lyrics earned him (and the Angry Samoans) significant notoriety in the early 1980s, especially due to their song "Get Off the Air", an ad hominem attack upon well-known KROQ-FM DJ Rodney Bingenheimer.

Mike Saunders (soccer)

Mike Saunders is a retired Jamaican soccer player who played professionally in the USL A-League and National Professional Soccer League.

Saunders attended the University of Connecticut where he played on the Huskies soccer team from 1990 to 1992. In 1993, he left the team to sign with the Connecticut Wolves of the USISL. He played for the Wolves again in 1994. In 1995, Saunders joined the New York Fever. In 1996, the Fever moved up to the A-League, but they sent Saunders on lone to the Wolves of the 1996 USISL Select League for most of the season. Despite playing on loan, Saunders scored fifteen goals for Connecticut. That fall, Saunders moved indoors with the Wichita Wings of the National Professional Soccer League. He was back with the Connecticut Wolves in 1997 as it played in the 1997 USISL A-League. The Wolves sent Saunders on loan to the Carolina Dynamo for three games. On January 20, 1998, the Connecticut Wolves sold Saunders contract to the Minnesota Thunder. In 1999, Saunders and the Thunder won the USL A-League championship. On May 10, 2000, the Thunder released Saunders. Eight days later, the Connecticut Wolves signed him. He played five games that season, then retired.

Mike Saunders (Canadian football)

Mike Saunders (born October 3, 1969) is a former Canadian Football League running back who played eight seasons for five different teams.

Biography

Saunders was born in Milton, Wisconsin and attended the University of Iowa. He was named CFL All-Star in 1995. He retired on May 8, 2000, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders second all-time leading rusher with 872 carries for 4,396 yards and 39 touchdowns. Over eight CFL seasons, he rushed 1,160 times for 5,780 yards and 39 touchdowns.
