Mike Ford (footballer)

Michael Paul "Mike" Ford (born 9 February 1966 in Bristol) is a former English professional footballer and current manager of Banbury United. His father Tony Ford was also a professional footballer.

Career

Ford began his career at Leicester City where he became a full-time professional at the age of 18. He was released by the club without making an appearance and moved to non-league side Devizes Town but he was signed a few months later by Cardiff City and quickly made his debut in a 1–1 draw with Leeds United. A mainstay in the side, Ford played in numerous positions for Cardiff in defence and midfield and helped them to promotion in his final year at the club. He signed for Oxford United in 1988 and was eventually made club captain. He spent ten years at the Manor Ground before being released in 1998 and being taken back to Ninian Park by Frank Burrows, who handed him the captaincy; he again helped Cardiff to promotion.

During the 1999–2000 season he developed a problem with a disc in his back and was forced to retire. After his retirement he was appointed as youth team manager at Oxford and was called back into action for the team in 2000 when the team faced an injury crisis, making one appearance against Bristol City. Ford also took over as caretaker manager on two separate occasions for Oxford when they were between managers and was working as assistant manager at the club when he was fired in 2003, a decision that caused outrage among Oxford fans. After he was sacked Ford had a spell playing for non-league side Thame United.

Mike Ford (rugby)

Mike A. Ford (born 18 November 1965) born in Oldham, is an English former rugby league player and current rugby union coach, the current Head Coach at Bath Rugby. Two of his sons currently play rugby union: George plays for Bath Rugby; Joe for Sale Sharks. He attended Saddleworth School from 1976-1981

Playing career

Ford played rugby league as a scrum-half/halfback, playing for Wigan, Leigh, Oldham (twice), Sydney Roosters, Castleford (twice), South Queensland Crushers, Warrington, Wakefield Trinity (captain) (Heritage #1097), and Bramley. He won 10 caps for Great Britain.

Ford played scrum-half/halfback in Wigan's 14-8 victory over New Zealand in the 1985 New Zealand rugby league tour of Great Britain and France match at Central Park, Wigan on Sunday 6 October 1985.

Ford played scrum-half/halfback in Wigan's 34-8 victory over Warrington in the 1985 Lancashire Cup final during the 1985–86 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Sunday 13 October 1985, played scrum-half/halfback, scored a try, and was man of the match in the 27-6 victory over Oldham in the 1986 Lancashire Cup final during the 1986–87 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Sunday 19 October 1986, played stand-off/five-eighth in Oldham's 16-24 defeat by Warrington in the 1989 Lancashire Cup final during the 1989–90 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens on Saturday 14 October 1989, and played, and scored a try in Castleford's 28-6 victory over Bradford Northern in the 1991 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1991–92 season at Elland Road, Leeds on Sunday 20 October 1991.
