Mick McCarthy

Michael Joseph 'Mick' McCarthy (born 7 February 1959) is a professional football manager, pundit and former player who is the current manager of Ipswich Town. Born in Barnsley, England with an Irish father, he played for the Republic of Ireland on 57 occasions scoring 2 goals.

McCarthy began his playing career at Barnsley in 1977, and he later had spells at Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon, and finally Millwall, retiring in 1992.

He went on to manage Millwall, and then the Republic of Ireland. He guided Ireland to the knockout stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He later managed Sunderland, and then Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has also worked as a television pundit and commentator, most recently for the BBC.

Playing career

Club

Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, McCarthy made his league debut for then-Fourth Division Barnsley on 20 August 1977 in a 4–0 win over Rochdale. He spent two years in the basement league, before the club won promotion. Two years later, the team again went up to the (old) Division 2. A strong central defender, he was a virtual ever-present for his hometown club, but departed in December 1983 for fellow Division 2 club Manchester City.

Mick McCarthy (1965 – February 1998) was an Irish sportsperson. He was born in Skibbereen, County Cork. He played Gaelic football with his local club O'Donovan Rossa and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 198 until 199.He won two senior All Ireland medals with Cork and captained O'Donovan Rossa to an All Ireland club final which they won.He scored 1-8 which made him the highest scorer in an All Ireland club final.

McCarthy was fatally injured in a road traffic accident on February 4, 1998.

Mick McCarthy (footballer, born 1911)

Mick McCarthy (goalkeeper) (born 22 December 1911 in Cork, died 21 May 1973) is a former Irish football goalkeeper.

He signed for Shamrock Rovers on 6 November 1931 from Fordsons.

He won one cap for the Irish Free State in a 2–0 win against the Netherlands at the Olympisch Stadion (Amsterdam) on 8 May 1932. Mick was the first League of Ireland goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet for Ireland.

After three years at Glenmalure Park Mick signed for Sheffield United F.C. making his debut on 1 September 1934 in a 3–2 win over Manchester United at Bramall Lane. However a serious thigh injury forced him to quit England and after a short spell at Brideville F.C. he returned to Rovers in 1936.

He also won one League of Ireland XI cap on 14 April 1941 at Windsor Park .
