Michael Turner (born 1962 in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a musician, and writer of poetry, prose and opera librettos.

Turner's work is often an examination of the entrenched and the seemingly ordinary; he often explores in great detail objects and concepts which are usually valued as means to an end, rather than ends, in themselves, as he does in Company Town (1991) and Kingsway (1995). Turner often varies his style and employs rich multi-format and intertextual approaches in his works, such as American Whiskey Bar (1997), and The Pornographer's Poem (1999).

Turner's work was adapted to radio, stage, television and feature film, and he has been translated into French, Russian, and Korean. He won the Genie Award in 1996 for Music/Original Song, the 2000 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and was also a finalist for the 1992 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.

Turner collaborated with artist Stan Douglas on two experimental-video screenplays, titled Journey into Fear (Istanbul Biennial, 2001) and Suspiria (Documenta XI, 2002) and on a screenplay with filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, titled Untitled Von Gloeden Project, based on the life and work of photographer Wilhelm Von Gloeden. He was commissioned to write a libretto for the Modern Baroque Opera Company, based on Wilhelm Busch's Max & Moritz.

Michael Turner (illustrator)

Michael Turner (born 1934) is a British illustrator who specialises in motoring and aviation paintings. He is regarded as one of the early examples of such type and is one of the most highly regarded of all. Turner counts racing drivers, teams, sponsors, pilots, motor and aircraft manufacturers, R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) and Army messes, museums and private collections as his client lists and has hosted a number of solo shows all over the world, plus other specialist shows.

Biography

Turner was born and raised within the suburbs of Harrow, Middlesex. During the Second World War, he became interested in aviation and aeroplanes of the Royal Air Force and drew aircraft in his school exercise books which infuriated his teachers. After the war, Turner developed an interest in motoring and motorsport when during his family holiday to the Isle of Man in 1947, they attended the British Empire Trophy Race.

After leaving school, Turner attended an art college, followed by national service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for two years. His first job after national service was with a London advertising studio and he turned freelance in 1957. Turner’s artworks was shown regularly on the wall of the renowned Steering Wheel Club in London and many of these illustrations appeared on magazine and book covers.

Michael Turner (actor)

Michael Turner (19 July 1921 - 14 July 2012) was a South African born actor who appeared in numerous British films and television series from the early 1950s. These include Emergency – Ward 10, The Avengers, Z-Cars, Doctor Who (in the serial The Wheel in Space), Van der Valk, Crown Court, Dixon of Dock Green, The New Avengers, Within These Walls, Angels, Crossroads, Cry Freedom, Boon, Pie in the Sky and The Bill.

Michael Turner (swimmer)

Michael H. Turner (born 16 June 1948) is an English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain at the Olympics and World University Games, and England in the Commonwealth Games, during the 1960s. He competed in freestyle swimming events.

He represented Great Britain at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, in the men's 4×100-metre freestyle relay. He also represented England at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, collecting medals in all three men's team relay events.
