Michael Steele

Michael Stephen Steele (born October 19, 1958) is an American politician and MSNBC political analyst as of May 2011. Steele served as the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee from January 2009 until January 2011. From 2003 to 2007, he was the seventh Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he chaired the Minority Business Enterprise taskforce, actively promoting an expansion of affirmative action in the corporate world.

In 2006, Steele made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate, losing to Democrat Ben Cardin. He then served as chairman of GOPAC, the political training organization of the Republican party, was a political commentator for Fox News and a partner at the law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP before making his bid for RNC Chairman. He co-founded the Republican Leadership Council, a "fiscally conservative and socially inclusive" political action committee, in 1993. On December 13, 2010, he announced his intentions to seek a second term as Republican National Committee Chair. On January 14, 2011, after four rounds of voting, Steele dropped out of the race and endorsed Maria Cino. Reince Priebus went on to win the election to succeed Steele. He commenced as a columnist for online magazine The Root in May 2011.

Michael Steele (born Susan Nancy Thomas on June 2, 1955) is an American bassist, guitarist, songwriter, and singer. She was a member of the Bangles and the Runaways, along with other bands.

Career

Steele began her professional career as Micki Steele in the teen-girl band the Runaways, one of the first all-female rock groups. Steele's stay in the Runaways was brief, leaving the band in late 1975, months before the recording of their first self-titled album. The main recording of this early period is an August 1975 demo session, bootlegged and later released as the 1993 album Born To Be Bad, with Steele playing bass and singing lead vocals on most songs. Additionally, this release also has her first songwriting credit with "Born To Be Bad", cowritten with Joan Jett and Kim Fowley. In September 1975 the Runaways recorded a second demo at the famed Gold Star Studios, to this date officially unreleased.

Steele's departure from the group has been given several interpretations—her own account being that she was fired by svengali-like manager Kim Fowley for refusing his sexual propositions and calling the band's debut single "Cherry Bomb" stupid. Fowley would further denigrate her for blowing a chance at fame and not possessing sufficient "magic" or "megalo" to make it in the music industry.

Michael Steele (Canadian politician)

Michael Steele (July 24, 1861 – January 1, 1946) was a physician and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Perth North in the Canadian House of Commons from 1911 to 1921 as a Conservative.

He was born in Avonbank, Canada West, the son of Thomas Steele and Joanna Todd, and was educated in St. Mary's, at the Toronto Normal School and at Trinity Medical College. He practised medicine in Tavistock. Steele was married twice: to Annie Clark in 1889 and then to Annie R. McGregor. Steele ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 1904 and 1908. From 1917 to 1921, he was a member of the Unionist Party. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1921. He died in Vienna, Ontario at the age of 84.
