MetroCard (New York City)

The MetroCard is the payment method for the New York City Subway; New York City Transit buses, including routes operated by Atlantic Express under contract to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), MTA Bus, and Nassau Inter-County Express systems; PATH; the Roosevelt Island Tramway; AirTrain JFK; and Westchester County's Bee-Line Bus System. It is a thin, plastic card on which the customer electronically loads fares. It was introduced to enhance the technology of the transit system and eliminate the burden of carrying and collecting tokens. The MTA discontinued the use of tokens in the subway on May 3, 2003, and on buses on December 31, 2003. The MetroCard is managed by a division of the MTA known as Revenue Control, MetroCard Sales and manufactured by Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc.

History

Transit Access Pass

The Transit Access Pass (TAP) card is a form of electronic ticketing used on most public transport services within Los Angeles County, California.

It is administered by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), the card and fare collection systems are manufactured by Cubic Transportation Systems and under contract from Metro, Xerox administers the Unified Fare System (UFS) and central call center (866-TAPTOGO) for all agencies.

Description

The TAP is a blue, or orange for reduced fare, credit-card-sized contactless stored value smartcard which can hold a Metro Pass. The TAP card must be tapped on electronic readers when entering and transferring within the system to validate it. TAP readers are integrated in bus fareboxes and standalone readers are located just outside the paid area of Metro Rail stations. Because Metro Rail has a mix of barrier free and faregated areas, it operates on a proof-of-payment system: as such, Metro's fare inspectors randomly check to make sure TAP users have validated their card by using a wireless handheld unit. The cards may be "recharged" in person from ticket vending machines in Metro Rail stations, at Metro Customer Service Centers or online. The card is designed to reduce the number of transactions at Customer Service Centers. The card costs $2 (or $1 from TVMs) and is only available with a fare media product (such as a day pass or stored value). Cards can also be purchased on Metro buses for $8 (since 15 September 2014), which include a day pass. TAP cards expire approximately 3–10 years from purchase.

Metrocard (Adelaide)

A metrocard is a contactless smartcard ticketing system using MIFARE-Technology and being rolled out across the Adelaide Metro bus, train and tram system. It is similar to the Octopus Card and Oyster Card used in Hong Kong and London respectively. The contract for the system was tendered out, and in 2010 was awarded to Affiliated Computer Services using technology used in, among others, Montreal, Canada, Houston, Texas and Toulouse, France.

It was originally scheduled to become fully operative in early 2013, however due to overwhelmingly positive response from trial users it was launched on 3 November 2012.

History

The original ticketing system was based on the Crouzet system and was provided by Affiliated Computer Services. It was introduced in 1987 and was intended to be used for only a few years before being replaced. Replacement plans soon fell through and the original equipment remained in use until 2012. In 2010, it was announced that Affiliated Computer Services had been awarded the contract to replace the aging Crouzet system with a new contactless smartcard system, which would also allow the current Edmondson-sized magnetic stripe tickets to remain in use.
