In its natural state, methane is found both below ground and under the sea floor, where it often finds its way to the surface and the atmosphere where it is known as atmospheric methane. The Earth's atmospheric methane concentration has increased by about 150% since 1750, and it accounts for 20% of the total radiative forcing from all of the long-lived and globally mixed greenhouse gases (these gases don't include water vapor which is by far the largest component of the greenhouse effect). Methane breaks down in the atmosphere and creates CH·3 with water vapor.
History
In November 1776, methane was first scientifically identified by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in the marshes of Lake Maggiore straddling Italy and Switzerland, having been inspired to search for the substance after reading a paper written by Benjamin Franklin about "flammable air". Volta captured the gas rising from the marsh, and by 1778 had isolated the pure gas. He also demonstrated means to ignite the gas with an electric spark.
The main ingredient in gas is methane ... Research has increasingly found more methane leaks along the gas supply chain than once thought — such as during extraction, as gas runs along pipelines, or when it’s shipped overseas.
Howrah... The landslides are occurring due to methane gas explosions beneath the waste heaps. Chakraborty said despite initiating bio-mining for gas release and pile levelling, an unexpected landslide created this emergency ... .
March 27, 2000. At the Barakova Mine in Ukraine, 81 miners were killed March 11 in one of the republic’s deadliest mining disasters ... Some 200 others escaped other parts of the mine. Methane gas is believed to be the cause of the explosion ... ....
Methane is a powerful but fast-acting greenhouse gas — it packs a big punch in the short term and weakens over time ... Methane is the primary component of natural gas, which often leaks out of drilling sites, pipelines, and storage facilities.
Across CD 8, Latino families live near oil and gas extraction sites, exposing them to methane pollution which can trigger asthma, respiratory illnesses, and even cancer ... for methane pollution.
Scientists also revealed that the breakthrough not only converts methane—a potent greenhouse gas—into eco-friendly materials but also overcomes key industrial bottlenecks.
Methane — a clear, odorless gas released from landfills, livestock facilities and fossil fuel operations —is more than 80 times as potent as carbon dioxide when it comes to near-term warming.
...Biden administration’s signature policy achievements, set aside $4.7 billion to plug orphaned wells, which can leak methane — a powerful greenhouse gas that fuels climate change — into the atmosphere.
The main ingredient in gas is methane ... Research has increasingly found more methane leaks along the gas supply chain than once thought — such as during extraction, as gas runs along pipelines, or when it’s shipped overseas. .
The Cyprus Institute has monitored greenhouse gas emission since 2020 with continuous measurements of carbon dioxide and methane levels carried out at two monitoring stations in Nicosia (Aglandjia) and Paphos (Inia).
... percent of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ... Livestock farming is a major source of methane, a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat over a 20-year period.
LNG projects is not primarily sourced from the high methane intensity Permian basin - currently gas from the Permian makes up only 10% of supply with more than two thirds coming from the lower emissions basins of the Haynesville and Northeast.
There are concerns about the environmental effects of gas, but one of the ways to lessen that is through methane abatement ... and advanced gas treatment facilities that minimise methane emissions. .
