Metallica (album)

Metallica (also known as The Black Album) is the eponymously titled fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 12, 1991, through Elektra Records, received widespread critical acclaim and became the band's best-selling album. Metallica produced five singles that are considered to be among the band's best-known songs: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad but True". "Don't Tread on Me" was also issued to rock radio shortly after the album's release, but the song did not receive a commercial single release. The album marked a change in the band's sound from the thrash metal style of the band's previous four albums to a less harsh one. Metallica promoted the album with a series of tours. In 2003, the album was ranked number 252 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The recording of Metallica was troubled; the band frequently entered conflicts with Bob Rock, the band's new producer, during production. The album debuted at number one in ten countries and spent four consecutive weeks at the top spot of the Billboard 200, making it Metallica's first album to top album charts. As of February 2016, the album has spent 363 weeks on the Billboard album chart, making it one of the ten longest running discs of all time.

Metallica: Through the Never

Metallica Through the Never is a 2013 American IMAX thriller concert film featuring the American heavy metal band Metallica. The film title is derived from the song "Through the Never" off the band's self-titled 1991 album. It follows a young roadie, Trip's (Dane DeHaan) surreal misadventures intercut with concert footage shot in Vancouver and Edmonton in August 2012. The film uses a unique premise of no dialogue or narration in the film's entirety with the exception of Trip's supervisor and the band. It was the first feature released by the revived incarnation of the Picturehouse marquee, which had been shut down since 2008.

Plot

Amid aerial footage of Vancouver and BC Place stadium, a radio DJ publicizes Metallica's concert. An overweight heavy-metal fan drives into the empty parking lot, which makes no sense for a sold out show only hours away, and climbs on the car's hood, whooping and laughing. Trip (Dane DeHaan), a roadie for Metallica, skateboards past the fan and wipes out. He skates into the underground parking lot and down the dressing-room halls, encountering each of the band members. When he gives a brown paper bag to his supervisor, Trip is told to stick around. After standing in the arena, he walks away as the audience files in to Metallica's traditional opener, "Ecstasy of Gold".

The Never

The Never is a Chapel Hill-based indie band. They have released two albums, both of which include both folk metal and R&B sensibilities. They have toured throughout the South and the East Coast of the U.S. and have performed with both Rilo Kiley and R.E.M.. Many of the songs on their latest album, Antarctica, deal with environmental issues, a band trait accentuated by their use of tour vehicles that are fueled by vegetable oil and biodiesel.

Early years

The Never began as a high school project-turned-successful-band called The B-Sides, composed of founding members Noah Smith and Ari Picker, as well as keyboardist Travis Horton, drummer Eric Kuhn, and bassist Ken Mosher, formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Their full length album Yes, Indeed, the B-Sides, Quite! was self-released in 2001 and became North Carolina's best-selling independent release for that year. When line-up changes left Smith and Picker as the only remaining original members, and with the addition of the brothers Jonny and Joah Tunnel of Vibrant Green, the band's name was changed to The Never.

Metallica: Through the Never is a soundtrack album for the film of the same name, consisting of live recordings by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on September 24, 2013 via Blackened Recordings and has charted in several countries.

All tracks on the soundtrack are live recordings from the Canadian shows at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta on August 17 and 18, 2012 and Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on August 24, 25 and 27, 2012, with the exception of "Orion" that was recorded live at soundcheck.
