Merit (law)

Merits (Old French merite, reward, moral worth) is a legal concept referring to the inherent rights and wrongs of a legal case, absent of any emotional or technical biases. The evidence is solely applied to cases decided on the merits, and any procedural matters are discounted.

Canon law

Canon law is the body of laws and regulations made by ecclesiastical authority (Church leadership), for the government of a Christian organization or church and its members. It is the internal ecclesiastical law governing the Catholic Church (both Latin Church and Eastern Catholic Churches), the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches, and the individual national churches within the Anglican Communion. The way that such church law is legislated, interpreted and at times adjudicated varies widely among these three bodies of churches. In all three traditions, a canon was originally a rule adopted by a church council; these canons formed the foundation of canon law.

Etymology

Greek kanon / Ancient Greek: κανών,Arabic Qanun / قانون, Hebrew kaneh / קנה, "straight"; a rule, code, standard, or measure; the root meaning in all these languages is "reed" (cf. the Romance-language ancestors of the English word "cane").

Canons of the Apostles

The Apostolic Canons or Ecclesiastical Canons of the Same Holy Apostles is a collection of ancient ecclesiastical decrees (eighty-five in the Eastern, fifty in the Western Church) concerning the government and discipline of the Early Christian Church, incorporated with the Apostolic Constitutions which are part of the Ante-Nicene Fathers In the fourth century the First Council of Nicaea (325) calls canons the disciplinary measures of the Church: the term canon, κανὠν, means in Greek, a rule. There is a very early distinction between the rules enacted by the Church and the legislative measures taken by the State called leges, Latin for laws.

Merit (indie rock band)

Merit is an indie rock band from Syracuse, New York.

Band history

In 2002, Wil Mecum and Jeff Nelson (attending Syracuse University at the time) joined forces with local singer songwriter Brenna Merritt, and took a variant spelling of her last name for their new band's name. Hal Appleby rounded out the group.

Remaining in Syracuse after graduation, the band plays there regularly, also trekking to NYC to play. Occasional tours have taken the band as far away as Georgia. They've opened for several national acts including Thousand Foot Krutch, Liz Phair, Stage, Bif Naked, The Reputation, and Freya.

Their first demo, recorded in May 2003 found its way to a Syracuse rock station, where it not only received airplay, but also won them an hour-long interview and acoustic performance. The local radio support caught the attention of Aux Records, a newly formed indie label in Central New York. Merit's first full-length album, When We Fight, came out on Aux in April 2004.

Since the album release, Merit has made several more in-studio radio appearances and has received support from stations ranging from Rochester to Albany, NY with their single Man on a String breaking into the top ten on K-Rock in Syracuse. The band was also honored as the recipient of the Brian Bourke Award for Best New Artist at the 2004 Syracuse Area Music Awards.

Merit (Catholicism)

In English usage merit (Latin meritum) is understood to be that property of a good work which entitles the doer to receive a reward (prœmium, merces) from him in whose service the work is done.

In Catholic theology, a supernatural merit can only be a salutary act to which God in consequence of his infallible promise may give a reward. This article deals with this application.

Nature of merit

Merit exists only in works that are positively good. The relation between merit and reward furnishes the intrinsic reason why in the matter of service and its remuneration, the guiding norm can be only the virtue of justice, and not disinterested kindness or pure mercy; for it would destroy the very notion of reward to conceive of it as a free gift of bounty (cf. Rom., xi, 6). If, however, salutary acts can in virtue of divine justice give the right to an eternal reward, this is possible only because they themselves have their root in gratuitous grace, and consequently are of their very nature dependent ultimately on grace, as the Council of Trent emphatically declares (Sess. VI, cap. xvi, in Denzinger, 10th ed., Freiburg, 1908, n. 810): "the Lord . . . whose bounty towards all men is so great, that He will have the things, which are His own gifts, be their merits."
