Mephisto (comics)

Mephisto is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in Silver Surfer #3 (Dec. 1968) and was introduced in the Marvel universe by Stan Lee and John Buscema, based on Mephistopheles – a demon character from the Faust legend, who often went by Mephisto as a nickname.

Debuting in the Silver Age of comic books, the character has appeared in over four decades of Marvel continuity. The character has also appeared in associated Marvel merchandise including animated television series, feature film, toys, trading cards, and video games.

Publication history

Inspired by the Mephisto of the Faust legend, he was introduced into Marvel comics by writer Stan Lee and penciler John Buscema, Mephisto debuted in Silver Surfer #3 (cover-dated Dec. 1968), and was established as a perennial foe for the cosmic hero, also appearing in Silver Surfer #8–9 (Sept.–Oct. 1969) and #16–17 (May – June 1970). Author Mike Conroy has described Mephisto as "the tempter who could offer the endlessly soul-tormented Silver Surfer the world, even dangling the Surfer's off-limits long-distance lover in front of him. As always the case with Lee's heroes, the Surfer's goodness and nobility won out, but Mephisto was only stymied, not defeated, and the pattern was set.

Mephisto (chess computer)

Mephisto was a line of chess computers sold by Hegener & Glaser (H+G). In addition to integrated travel and sensory computers, they also sold a line of modular electronic autosensory boards (Modular, Exclusive, München, and Bavaria) which could accept different program, processor, and display modules.

Its strongest software was written by Richard Lang, who later ported it to personal computers as Psion and ChessGenius. Lang's Mephisto programs won six World Computer Chess Championships (WCCC) from 1984 to 1990. H&G also sold engines licensed from Johan de Koning, Ed Schröder, and Frans Morsch. Different models used different 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit processors, including MOS Technology 6502, Motorola 68HC05, Motorola 68000 and others.

Hegener & Glaser and its Mephisto brand were bought in 1994 by Saitek. Their computers currently sold under the Mephisto brand use programs written by Frans Morsch.

Mephisto (born December 12, 1968), whose birth name is unknown, is a Mexican professional wrestler or Luchador currently working for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Mephisto is the son of Luchador Astro Rey/Kahoz and has previously worked both as Astro Rey Jr. and Kahoz Jr. but has been most successful as Mephisto. Since adopting the Mephisto gimmick he has been associated with the group Los Infernales especially Averno who has been his regular tag team partner for years. Mephisto and Averno are considered one of the top permanent teams in Mexico since 2000. Mephisto is a former holder of the NWA World Welterweight Championship.

Biography

The man who would grow up to wrestle as Mephisto was born on December 12, 1968 in Mexico City, son of Alberto Leonel Hernández López, a man who would later become known as the Luchador "Astro Rey" and "Kahorz". By 1971 his father had started wrestling which meant that the future Mephisto grew up around wrestlers, wanting to become one himself from a very early age.
